With my Rebal XT the moment I press the button...the camera fires. My SD550 has a long hesitation from when I press the button to when the camera takes the picture. What selections can I make using the menu items to speed this up.

that's a shutter delay common w/ digital P&S cameras. there's nothing you can do about it. That's the advantage of a dslr over a dp&s. Now, if it is ridiculously long, make sure you don't have the self-timer on.

That's generally the biggest complaint with point and shoots. The only workaround I know of is to hold the shutter release halfway down a second or so before you are going to take the pic. Then when you depress it fully there will be much less lag.

You can use the hyperfocal method to gain a bit of speed. This way, with a preset manual focus, the lens doesn't spend time focussing the lens. Still slower than a dSLR though. It's a good trade off though, considering the size differences.
