S1 IS lens

The lens on my SI IS sais 5.8 - 58 mm 1:2.8 - 3.1
First of all, 5.8mm...that would make it like a super duper wide angle..which it is not.
Second...58mm..but its 10 times zoom..shouldn't it be like 400mm or something?
What does the 1:2.8 - 3.1 mean... I don't think its the aperature becuase i can get it to go from 2.8 to 8.0

2.8 at the wide end
3.1 at the tele

5.8 mm with a 5mm (or so) sensor, gives you about 40 mm equivalent in 35mm.
