I'm in the same boat, but have purchased the 20D. I have a lens question and not sure where to post it. Actually, I haven't figured out how to start a new thread.

I would like to get the Canon 70 - 200 2.8. and save the cash by going mono or tripod instead of IS since I'm starting from scratch. I haven't found the same scenario in search. I'm mostly shooting horses in indoor arenas for winter shows. I will pick a spot to stand for the most part and catch everyone over a particular jump, or section.

Suggestions? Thanks!

If you're planning to work from one spot, you might want to consider a fast prime, say the 85 f/1.8, 100 f/2 or 135 f/2. The extra stop may help out in poor lighting (which you will get!). For that matter, you probably want to have a fast 50 in your bag too, since you're shooting indoors where there'll be less room and possibly crowds at the rail if it's a popular event.

Thanks. Good suggestion on the primes too. I'm renting a Canon 2.8 and testing with the IS on and off and on a tripod and monpod to see what I'm most comfortable shooting. So far each time I've tried to save money and cut a corner I've been disappointed with the results. Geeze, I could buy another horse for what the business setup is costing. Ah well!

On the tripod, you may find it keeps you too far away from the rail, plus getting in the way of passers-by. I'd figure on going with the monopod, possibly with some shock cord to secure it to the rail for convenience.
