View Full Version : G2 w/ B+W 10X macro for Slide Copying... (an experiment)

I thought I would see if there is any hope of copying slides with a B+W 10X close-up lens equipped G2… The slide used is a twenty year old 35mm Kodachrome image.

The left image is from a Nikon Coolscan IV with ICE (dust removal) set on “fine” (this is the most aggressive setting and so some sharpness was lost).

The right image is the Canon G2 with B+W 10X close-up lens (they call it a macro lens).
The canon image has undergone some “cloning tool” dust cleanup in Photoshop 6.0 and has been sharpened.

As you can see that while neither one is great, and either would work for a web image, the Coolscan image would definitely produce a better print. Particularly annoying in the G2 plus close-up lens shot, is the visible chromatic aberration causedby the close-up lens. (Look at the edge of the Teak gunwale (upper edge of the side of the boat for you farmers out there…).

Greetings from Wisconsin,
Dave

Note: The color of the water is accurate. The photo was taken on March 1st 1980 off of Rockaway NY. The air temperature was in the 40s F, the water temp was in the 30s, and seawater gets dark those temps. It is interesting to note that my wife and I were sailing our brand new Whitehall for the first time. And yes, it was pretty stupid to be out that far on the ocean in an open 15 footer in those temps. (It was however one of the best days of our lives.)

Dave,
With the G-2 are you using the Photosolve Xtend a slide pro accessory or some other homebrew to hold your slide? Dust and dirt seems to be a major PS clean up issue for me too, when digitizing slides. I clean both sides of the slide and the holder each time, but I guess old slides can be very dusty. I have been using a +5 and +4 filter together, and at max telephoto the slide just about fills the screen on my G-1.

Just a quick lash up to see if building a device would be worth the effort...

The slide was held by a woodworking clamp, 10 inches above a white sheet of paper that was lit from one side only, by a halogen desk lamp. In other words... No expense spared in the cause of Science!

Overall, while the results are good enough for web use, I was disappointed enough by the chromatic aberration that, I will continue to borrow the Coolscan when I can.

Oh yes, DUST... That's why I got into digital photogrphy in the first place!
