I have just recently bought a Canon D30, Old I know, but this is my first digital camera and I wanted an SLR but wanted to keep the cost low and I heard this was a great camera in its day, anyway my problem is i cannot transfer photos from the camera to my laptop, reason being no software came with the camera and the x owner does not have it.
Is there a way of getting the pics onto my computer without the software or can anyone tell me where I could get this disc.
I run windows 2000,
Any help will be greatley appreiciated.

I got a USB card reader for my computer so I wouldn't have to connect the camera. They're not very expensive. The one I got will read a bunch of different types of memory cards. Oh, and WELCOME to POTN!

You can pick up a card reader for about $10 US. It would be the easiest way to get the job done.

Hi
Used my D30 for 2 years before I got my 20D and I used a card reader all the time. Never installed the Canon software
Nice camera.
All the best

Correction, it still IS a great camera. OK, it's only 3Mp but I've had cracking A3 prints from that, quite a few of which won Seals of Merit at my camera club - heck I even had one for an image that I cropped down to about 2Mp and put on a slide, the judge couldn't tell until I came clean ;-)
If you look around the web, the most common complaint about it is the focussing. OK it ain't stellar, but it is certainly usable. The thing to do is to help it out a bit - set it to only use the centre focussing point and if need be focus on an edge in the subject. That really helps it do the job. All the rest you'll probably figure out, if you don't just ask here. there's plenty of people who'll be able to guide you.
BTW, in reply to your question - yes, a card reader is the way to go. The D30 is only USB1 and really isn't very fast at transferring images even if you did have the software.

www.canon.com might have the driver you need. I think its called the TWAIN driver. They had the one for the 300D. I need to get a card reader myself but for now I am just downloading off the camera.

I think the easiest way is to buy a PCMCIA to CF adaptor and just shove it in the side of your lap top.
I don't know enough about windows to really comment here but I can't read RAW format files without canons software, it's alright with JPEGs though.

You don't need a card reader or any software. You can download the driver from Canon, and then drag and drop the files in Windows Explorer from the Canon D30 (visible as a drive) into a folder you have made for your pics.
