I just watched an amazing documentary. Essentially the lives of children living in the squalid red lights districts of India's darkest bowels (Sonagchi, Calcutta ). These children are being taught photography and the documentary circles around their photography teacher's efforts to get them into decent boarding schools as an escape from certain prostitution.
A must see.
Born into Brothels won "best documentary" Oscar in 2005.

I loved the movie..... I was concerned as well about being depressed. I found it very inspiring and well done. Well worth a rental or purchase.
Some of the images these children shot were amazing, and so thoughtful in composition and candids.

I found this movie not depressing at all. I rented the DVD and was struck at how what some people perceive as "street urchins" can compose a P&S shoot camera photograph so well. Art knows no boundary.
I know the topic was mentioned here before but this is now available on DVD. When you see the DVD the special features allow you to see what the sale of their prints has brought them. Freedom from peril. You see how these kids learn English and act like regular teenagers.
Never have I seen photography used as such. Amazing.
