I've just purchased this camera and was going to buy an extra battery. I've noticed a big difference in cost between the generic and cannon NB-2LH batteries. Could someone educate me on this matter?

In general, any photo accessorary with the "Canon" name on it will cost more than something more widely manufactured and distributed. Sometimes, like for a lens, it's worth it. But with respect to batteries, I suggest sticking to the well-known names such as Energizer, Duracell, Toshiba, even Maxell, etc. Don't get a "no-name" cheapie, as they are often of suspect quality and performance. But there's no need to get one with a Canon brand, either. Just be sure the power rating (mAh) is sufficient for your camera.

I bought a knock off brand for my S50 and it didn't work at all. I followed up with a Kodak brand batt and it works just fine. Check the mAh rating, the bigger the better.
