Nice captures, but I would have liked less flash / more ambient. (More like the other gig you posted)

Great shots, they look like an interesting band to see live.......I'm guessing the light was particularly bad to need flash.

Oh, Lord, I spoke too soon on that last thread ... these guys really wanted a different look ... too bad all the looks look so cheesey! El Guto needs a diet. Great job capturing them though. If they are so good why do they prostitute themselves with those costumes? Is it perhaps part of the mystique? Honest questions from an old fart.

Here's the lowdown Dwight :)
When Turbonegro formed in the early 90s the trend among the underground musicians in Norway was to be as "grim" and "evil" as possible, including their apparance. These guys wanted to go in the opposite direction and appear to be as gay as possible. This look has stuck with them ever since. I think it adds a lot to the live performance, if they weren't so outrageous one might as well listen to their albums. When you think about it the look isn't really that different that the early glam bands you may have heard of such as Angel and the New York Dolls.

Aha, you hit the nail on the head ... sort of ... I know almost nothing about this genre of music, or most any other contemperary music, including history, style, evolution, names or dates! When I shoot world class acts at the casino I often have no idea who they are until I visit their websites to find out. So, while I have some idea who Merle Haggard, who I will photograph next week, is, I had no idea who Marco Antonio Solis, who I will shoot in three weeks, is.
I'm 60 and not a musician. Most of my peers know every band that existed when they were in their 20s and 30s, but that was not my interest. My wife is always saying, "How could you NOT know who so-and-so is????" So, when I look at these bands with their almost comic or childish costumes I tend to wonder about their musical ability because it would seem to be such a distraction. On the other hand, if they are known for their costumes rather than their music, then I can understand it. I have a similar problem with DJs ... they don't create the music, they just play it ... how can you make much of that when my three year old could do it? But, there obviously is some mystique and style about it since some people have attained at least a modicum of fame just playing others' recordings. So I expect that all these things are similar to most every other aspect of entertainment and sports ... the more you have experienced and understand all the subtleties of what is going on the more you can appreciate it at the level it is intended. Except for baseball, of course, which is most boring and mindless of all entertainments!

Pretty bizarre looking group. They would fit right here in NYC. Coolpics, I like the shutter drag in #4.

Ooops, sorry, just passing by. Getting dislexic in my old age...I thought that was pictures of "turbine-generators" in which I am interested in.

Ah but Dwight, photographers don't create a picture, they just point their camera at stuff and press a button, it must be easy. I'm sure your three year old could do that as well, which isn't to take away from the talents of someone like Steve Mcurry is it?
If you've never seen a real DJ (the kind that garner the international fame) you wouldn't imagine the creativity involved, but the kind that just "play someone elses music" don't get any credit because well, none is deserved.
Metal - Thanks for that explanation on their look. I couldn't help but think "what a bunch of fruits" the first time I saw this thread, but with that explanation it makes alot of sense. The third one with the drummer is fantastic IMO

Ah, yes, Twichie, I expect that's true (which part is up to you, of course) which is why I added the next to last sentence ... I believe that almost all art benefits from understanding and it is generally easier to express ones' naive view of such art and allow the enlightened to expound on the intracacies and details that make it so much more rich and complex than the ignorant eye notes. So, should I visit Toronto or Chris' or Erik's nook of the woods, I will demand that I be taken to swoon in the presence of these conquerers! :-) I mean this in only the most friendly and "willing to be educated" way.
