View Full Version : Moderator job description

Although I have been on the net since Mr. Gore invented it this is the only forum I have spent any time on. What exactly do moderators do except police the site for rude posts and the like ? How many hours does one plan to spend moderating each day and is the pay good:confused: ?

CyberDyneSystems

Essentially they enforce the rules of a given forum. But we spend more time doing simple house cleaning. Simple mistakes being corrected (moving threads posted in the wroing forums etc..)

The amount of time depends on how busy the forum in question is and how many share the load.

I have never heard of a Mod psotion that paid,. it is strictly volunteer.

Well, let me clarify that. It is volunteer after we were asked and agreed to do it. No one was more surprised at being asked than I was and I was a bit hesitant to accept. But it has been a job full of learning, surprises, laughter and gratification.

Sometimes there is much more to life than money... I've learned that over the years. Doing this job for free is a no-brainer for me.

Agree and I too was very surprised to get that invitation from Pekka. Though the "only" thing I have on my duty list is the coming FAQ I already have had the pleasure of banning 2 spammers

gee they are saying they do things behind the sences but do you really see it. Next time a moderator does some moderating thing I wont to see it

I don't pay good money for nothing, no wait I don't pay, DOH!

Anyway I am glad that there are so many good moderators around here. They do say they do a good job :D

Moderators are issued cloaks of invisiblity, and we have a secret handshake.

Moderators are selected for their charm, wit, natural grace, and extreme good looks. The ability to speak and write English (or any language) is not a prerequisite.

I can only imagine the banter than must go on amongst you lot behind a closed forum :)

A good moderator is a street cleaner, a police officer, a navy seal, a diplomat, a teacher, a leader and a parent all in one.
Some people start the roll with all or most of these, and others start becuase they show promise in a some, and rapidly learn the others.

Pretty tame stuff, really.

We do have a little trouble keeping Maureen in line, but everybody else is serious, sober, and strictly 'nose to the grindstone.'

:D :D :D

This forum has been growing at a rapid rate and it is speculated to continue to do so. Rather than adding moderators in small clusters, I think they decided a bigger group was needed and it does take some time to learn the ropes. Hopefully, we are getting less dependent on the Sr. Mods as we become familar with New Territory.

Since the last pay increase, there's been a lot more interest in the job. The Bonus Bucks for Banning promotion was a real stroke of genius. Some of us are making a fortune with that one.

Okay, I'm kidding. We don't make any money.

Actually, there are still only 4 of us. All the 'new moderators' are simply alter egoes we've created just to intimidate the would-be rule breakers. We take turns being Maureen just so we can stay in touch with our feminine side.

RFM is having a little trouble with that one, but slowly adapting. I think he hates the lipstick part most.

I consider myself a seagull moderator: I fly on in occasionally, make a lot of noise, and take off leaving a trail of cr*p behind me. Usually one of the other mods repairs the damage before anyone notices ;)

Moderators are issued cloaks of invisiblity, and we have a secret handshake.

Don't forget the dance.

Nonsense, we're the image of propriety. I'm the very model of a modern major general. CDS even spells things correctly when people aren't watching him, it's a ruse to put people at ease.

Something I've been wondering... why the sudden, drastic increase in the number of moderators. It went from very few, to a LOT... quickly.

I'm really tired, so I'm going to give you a serious answer. Being funny takes thought.

I don't know that any individual stands out, but there have been a couple that really disappointed us. They had been valuable, contributing members, but were just wired in such a way that they couldn't handle being 'corrected' when they crossed the line.

It's really sad to see people self-destruct.

As a class of offenders, the provocateurs are the worst. Their whole goal in life is to make people mad and start arguments. They don’t contribute; they insult and disrupt, and as soon as they make their true intentions known, they are ‘dis-invited’ from participating in the forum.

There is much less of that sort of thing than one might imagine, especially in a forum this size..

I wanna be a moderator. Here are my credentials:

1. I know very little about photography, at least compared to you guys.

2. I'm terrible in math, and so anyone who needs a question answered about DOF or flash output, look elsewhere because I won't be responding.

3. I'm on the forum each and every day, always on the lookout for CDS and Belmondo's poor grammar.

4. I take my meds every time so I don't explode when I see their egregious use of the English language.

5. I'm really a nice guy.

6. I have some great equipment that I'd really like to learn how to use better.

7. I'll do it for free.

8. Any salary I may be entitled to, I'll donate right back to Pekka.

9. I'm now a senior member by going over a thousand posts and deserve the recognition.

And the Number 10 reason I should be a moderator?

I'm going to throw myself on the floor and kick and scream like a two year old baby, hold my breath until I turn blue, unless you give in and make me one.

Love ya, babes.

Good point, Tim. Both my Grammars died when I was a young child, and I think we should speak of them respectfully.

I'll be glad to give you the definition of "this") Used to refer to the person or thing present, nearby, or just mentioned: This is my cat. These are my tools.

In comment to MDJAK's post: It sounds like you're over-qualified!:(

There's a quote I read somewhere quite a while ago, it was related to people being in charge of countries. It was something like "power should never be given to people who seek it out". I think it was in a book, instead of electing a president they made a list of every intelligent person who would be able to do the job, and picked someone randomly from the list. That seems like a much better idea to me than letting some rich guy with unknown motives who can afford to campaign, rule.

This post represents only my opinion, I do not speak for anyone else

For those of you lost on tim's last post...what he was trying to say is..

MDJAK has no chance of becoming a mod. :-D

I think I need to add a disclaimer.... in that post I speak only for myself, not for Pekka or any of the other moderators.

(Said with my thickest Brogue:) Oh, Tim, me boy, I'm not a-tall rich. And I'm not campaigning one whit, me son. In fact, me laddy, power never even entered me mind.

Ya see, me brood, I've never had the absolute pleasure of participating in a forum where the mods are real people, knockin' back a few Guinness in between shoots.

The only other forum I've participated in, I'm within a hair of being tossed overboard like a stale twinkie. And I protest my innocence.

Now, if I were rich, as Zero Mostel said: I'd have the time of my life to sit in B&H and pray; maybe have a seat by the medium format wall.

I would discuss the learned books with the salesmen seven hours every day.

Ahhh, that would be the sweetest thing of all.

Now, about that mod position we have been im'g about, my sonny.
