View Full Version : Kleptography just got smaller...

No, I haven't deleted all those pictures I put up for fun rather than art. But I did create a low-res version of the website for viewers with smaller monitor resolutions or modem connections.
There is one disclaimer... I simply took every photo on the original site, shrunk it to about half size, unsharp masked it at 100, 0.2, 0, and posted it. I tried resetting my own monitor to 800x600 to check them out but everything looks awful, including the big shots, so I can't guarantee the quality of the smaller images.

There are "jump" links at the bottom of each gallery to switch back and forth between low-res and high-res.

Don

Don, the small version, when viewed on a cable modem, is very speedy! Image quality looks good, too.
I did the same thing with my gallery recently - downsized the pics and saved with somewhat greater compression. No altruistic reasons though - I had simply exceeded my storage limit!

don,
very many thanks for all the adjustments you have made on your website for all the weaker 'sets' to have more ease when viewing.
it didn't seem to need any improvments at all, before, but you have done wonders.
it also seems to help the subject in the pictures appear even better then ever.
those banana shots are just amazing
and when one returns to see other pictures how they all quickly slide/glide into place so quickly
also the size really does show them off better.
and the option of 'big or small' viewing is really nice
one of the pictures displaying banana land is like a hand reaching through ; 'banana sighting'
not too sure I had seen that one ,or a few others before.
'banana cavern' is lovely. many many of them are .
'buffet time' looks something like a musical instrument.
its really amazing the different shapes and sizes
showing how a banana starts out.
all the banana land shots show something, I would think which a lot of us never knew before ...
about bananas
'take two', its like as though they are a pair of childs legs sticking out of pants. funny looking.
'banana clusters' is perfect diagonally
and your descriptions are a treat
'reaching for the sky' , another great one
as are the previous wonderful pictures I mentioned on the other post a while ago.
their colours, everything
the titles and the descriptions are terrific. all over
really very enjoyable and beautiful
with very many thanks
marie

Hi Mitch,
Thanks for the feedback... nice to know that image quality didn't suffer too much.
I won't try to convince you to get your own website, but mine is hosted by Yahoo Domains -- which bought out the people I started with, SimpleNet -- and it costs me US$15 per month, I just checked and have 230MB of photos, which is not the allowance, but what I have on the site at the moment.
Just a thought for the future.
Cheers,
Don

Hi Marie,
Thank you for all your (very specific) observations. Although I never had a complaint about the size of the images, I did realize that if you're not running about 1280x1024, you're going to have to scroll the photo. While that offers plenty of detail, you lose the impact (and convenience) of having the entire photo appear on-screen at once.
Thanks again for your feedback. Your comments are always appreciated.
Cheers,
Don

Both sizes came up instantly for me which is more than I can say for pekka's site lately. It is getting very slow. I guess the traffic is growing quite a bit.

hi there!
just a hint for large pictures. there are programs out there in the big "net" wich are realy usefull tu cut large pictures in a adjustable number of small rectangles. this makes loading faster because the browser can load each rectangle paralell. thats very usefull specially for slower connections.
For example you might use macromedia fireworks for that.
best regards
Peter
