So I go to my favorite surfing spot on Saturday morning … and instead of surfing … there is a JetSki Contest. Got a superb position and shot away. Over 200 images. Hard to decide what ones to post. But here are a few:

Cool! Love this one - http://www.pettusphoto.com/images/CRW_7482.jpg - the blue jet ski with the guy standing upright. And the babe shot - do I detect a hint of camera shake? He, he, he, he....

I didn’t expect this event so all handheld with long lenses. So many images it was difficult to select what ones to put up on the site. Here is another example of straight up … I have dozens of these ….(babe shot … ya just got to love living in Southern California!)

You got it! Most are 70-200 2.8L. A few are 100-400 4.5 L. I used both 10D and D60.

70-200??? Man, how close to the jet skier were you (or is this a partial crop)?

Great shot, btw.

Ok, this is very odd.

This is my first time here. Go to the Canon Digital Forum, since I have a D30, and boom - I see JetSki as a forum title. Click on it and low and behold, I was at that same event, however I knew it was going on :)

So with my Tamron 400, I got way less than the results I wanted - should have used my Canon 75-300 but i thought I was too far out.

Anyone care to check out my work? I have two pbase.com sites so far...

http://www.pbase.com/ehannigan/ijsba_oceanside

That's the JetSki work..with two gratitious babe shots :)

www.pbase.com/ehannigan

and

www.pbase.com/edhannigan

I'm a total newbie - and can take and wish to have all the pointers i can.

Ed

If pbase responds slowly, remove the www and just use pbase.com/name - their DNS seems to be hosed a lot.

Most of the images were shot from the Oceanside Pier. The course design had two turns about 10 meters (30 feet) from the pier that required me to zoom back from 200mm for many shots. I did crop the images on my site but mostly for composition and not to zoom in. Here are a few straight convert from RAW and reduced in size but no cropping:

Double thumbs up!! :D Great shots. Really shows the “experience” of the moment. Unfortunately, I didn’t know the event was on and had to leave after a few heats. Missed out on the aerial stunts completely. Looks like fun! Isn’t it rough living in So Cal! 8)

Honestly, I've never taken a class on photography, I have no idea - I'm shooting in the auto Sports mode - and I'm just guessing as to where and what is a good shot. That's why I came up here - I need you Yodas to teach me, that i do :)

Great Shots Dan , can I ask did you remove the uv filter for the shots using the Canon 70-200 2.8L , I have read in a forum that canon recommend this as it can effect focus on the 10d ,
KRs
Pixel.

UV Filter in place. I’ve never experienced problems with focusing on my 10D. Even went so far as to test both my D60 and 10D in exact conditions and both cameras focus identically and well within limits of the specification.
