Not sure if this is in the right area. I had someone ask me if I could tutor him. He needs to learn some simple PP and backing up his files from his computer to a DVD/HDD. He wants to pay me, but I don't know what to charge. My session fee is $60 for the first two hours and $45 every hour after. I was thinking about charging him those rates. It should only take a 2-3 hours to teach him on what he wants to learn. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's your time. Offer to charge the full $60/hr for as many hours as he wants. Offer to give him free email support, assuming the questions relate to what you tutored and assuming your responses don't take much of your time. If he needs more extensive support ("handholding" included), tell him that it will cost more.

If he accepts that, fine. If not, that's fine too. $60/hr is actually good for general computer support. If he doesn't like that, let him find support elsewhere. If he initially declines, I'll guess he'll be back, especially if you know what you're doing.

You're instructing him. If you know what you're doing and you can help him learn, then it is worth that amount of money to him, and it's worth your time to help him. I see no problem in getting a good price for good tutoring. If he's reasonable, he should also see no problem in paying a good price to learn what he needs to know.

If he balks, it's his problem, not yours. (Fwiw, I'm a researcher/programmer by profession.)

Make sure you write down what topics you will cover and check them off as you cover them.

Thanks for the response Graham. His wife bought him a T2i and he is a little confused on it, and backing up his files. I agree that $60/hr is resonable for what I am going to teach him. I might even get some free financal advice thrown in too(he is a financal advisor). He found me through the local chamber of commerce, so networking does work.

Thanks

Why would you expect that? You're not giving him advice for free.

$60 an hour? Ouch.

I'd say do it for free. Do it for the sake of networking. In return you might get some financial advice. Or maybe not. Don't expect anything in return but I still do it for free and try to build the relationship.

Easier to give an answer if you could tell us his reason for needing this and what he plans to do with the information.

I'll use my mom as an example. She was a well known cake designer in the days before celebrity chefs. She had a couple ladies come to her for individual instruction and she charged them what she thought was a fair price. They loved it. Had several classes with her and then used that info to start a business that, in theory, was now her competition.

Visit the business plan and change her focus. She added a zero to her rate and changed it to a consulting service. Even made a run at licensing some of the techniques that were her style.

He just wants to learn how to take the files from his camera to his laptop, do minor processing, and then export those files to a DVD/CD so he can take the DVD/CD somewhere and have them printed. He has a T2i and has a lot of photos on his laptop. He didn't say how many. He also wants to learn about backing up his files just in case anything happens to his laptop. He is not looking to go into business for himself, he does very well as a financial advisor. And I was not serious about asking for free financial advice. I like the idea of a consulting service.

Thanks
