Differences between telephoto and tele-convertor lens?

Hi guys,

anybody knows what are the differences between a telephoto and tele-convertor lens?

Or are they actually the same?

If my cam thread is 52mm,and i use a 37mm lens,with step-down ring,is that kind of stupid?

Or is the other way round better?

Man,really need some advise on this.......

If you're talking about a fixed lens camera like the G3, S40, etc., then I imagine they would both mean the same thing since you have to attach a separate lens to the existing len to get more telephoto.
