I'm finding this sigma part # (548101)lens all over the place at $339...is this the right Sigma? It's advertised as F2.8, dg, macro df...I thought the DF was a designation for the old 24-70...one place that had it was Broadway photo...their add says 1 year warrentee...I thought sigma was a better warrentee than that..It doesnt say anything about import special..?? At $339 I'd go for that over the Tamron just for the nice case! Even if it's the older version...I've seen no evidence here yet that there is really a difference!? "course I can't get to any of the stores advertising it until Thursday due to the holidays!!!

If it is #548101, it is the "EX DG Macro". Broadway Photo isn't the most reputable place though. If I were you, I'd just buy it at "Sigma4Less-BUT-Shipping4More" or "DeltaInternational". They both sell the new one only.

Ya' they are $364...better service ?? Got any idea how to find what sigma offers for its different lenses?? nothing on their website that is obvious to me...You did that nice comparison on the Tamron vs sigma right? Got any final thoughts on photo quality before I do something stupid?

You can't be stupid if you get either the 2470EX or 2875Di. Optically they are very close, optically they are excellent. In my use of 1 older 2470EX, 2 newer 2470EXs, and 2 2875Dis, I found that I had more confidence using the Sigma's wide open throughout the focal range than the 2875Dis. But again, all of them are useable-to-good wide open and the decision should be made based on focal range, weight/size, build, AF speed, feel/handling, things like that. Both are respected lenses, especially at their price-point. For me, it's the Sigma running away for its 24mm, build, and AF speed. But the 2875Di is a VERY good lens as well.

One question and one comment:

I bought the 70-200mm because of Peachman's earlier thread about it, no regrets whatsoever. I ordered it through Sigma4Less with no issues.

The 24-70 does not have HSM, correct? Any users that have used both HSM and non-HSM Sigmas able to comment on the differences?

Thanks, David

I would probably use Sigma4less or deltainternational for ordering. Did notice that the Sigmas are now sold by Dell and until yesterday was on sale and with the dell codes. I almost pushed the send button on the 70-200mm f/2.8 for $635 shipped. If it is on the next round, I will probably get it if I haven't already ordered it from one of the two places mentioned.

Sigma's HSM is like Canon's USM, Quiet. I have both version 70-200 HSM and 24-70 NON-HSM and without it is VERY NOISY. If you are shooting in a church, it would certainly be noticed. I plan on practicing manual focusing because some places may not allow such noisy device.
I wished Sigma had a HSM version of this lens.

The noise is a bit welcome to me...I like to know that things are functioning when I push the button..I can't imagin it would be distracting to many people except maybe at a very quiet church..One of my canon lenses is very quiet, so quiet I'm never sure it's actually functioning...Then again when I see some of my blury shots maybe it's not!:D

Here's a pic I took from the "older" 24-70 this morning. Played a little with auto contrast and curves and minimal sharpening.

wow,,nice shot, nice orchids, nine lens...thanks for showing those...all the camera shops are off holiday today and I hope to make a decision on one...although last night I was messing with my 70-200 to see how much I valued the 75mm over the 70 (in the tami 28-75 vs 24-70 debate) and I gotta say...when I'm shooting candid stuff, the 70 or 75 may not be enough, but the 200 is to big to be sticking in folks faces inside a house (but I still want the close up and personal look...) and I can't find a camera store in Maine that has either in stock for me to try.........agghhhhhhh !I'm going nuts Stop me condyke!.....sorry 4x4...I'm better now

Word of caution on ordering...I have found that most stores offering same lens at about same price are offering US warranty, but one or two who have especially low price are NOT offering lens with US warranty. For example, Tamron USA provides mutiyear warranty, but outside of US it is only 1 year warranty. So read carefully the web information before pushing the Order button, and know what the US distributor offers for standard warranty terms

Peachman thanks for the comments. I was pouring over the same decision a while ago too :). While a guy was offering a great deal on the Tamron, which at that time was out of stock everywhere, I found a greater deal with the Sigma. As ignorance as I was and didn't know there was a non-Macro EX and haven't read fstopjojo's review, I jumped on the deal.

I like the feel of the Sigma, the non-rotating focus ring and the huge front element looks cool :). It's not heavy, it's well built . I used to lug around the old HUGE VHS tape recorder.

You'll like either lens.

Sorry to throw a third lens in the works, but check out the Sigma 24-60/2.8 as well. I've been looking into this one. It's a lot more compact, and if I were to ditch my Tamron 28-75, that will most likely be the one. With the 20D's crop, I rarely use 60-75mm, and if I do, I'm using the 70-200/2.8L IS anyway. The 24-60 is about 25% shorter and 25% lighter than the 24-70, but, it's about 25% more expensive too. It's smaller and a lot lighter than the Tamron as well.

Captain Peach ... you need to fill in your Sig with gear so we can see what you have already. If you're going to be mainly indoor then maybe the 50mm 1.8/1.4 of 85mm 1.8 might be better choices for portrait use, less so for outdoor and walkaround style.

Note that the Sigma is a superb lens and I would always have it in preference to the Tamron, having have both, but as fstop says the optical side is pretty close either way and you can't lose. I dunno what holding one will do for you. For me it's about use and situation in which it will be used. I have zero problems carrying the SIgma around and zero problems with its size. It's just no big deal. The Tamron will fit in your pocket tho'. The Sigma might not.

No, M/Condyke ...I'll be carrying it around outside...don't generally do much inside shooting...Actually I plane almost all my gear around trips to the country of the famous Freddycr (that would be Costa Rica) where I plane to end up permenently in a few years...I am with you regarding the sig...the remaining two issues I need to get over are the price of filters required for that 82mm adapter, and again the size, while looking cool and important , is a bit of an intemidating monster to shove in the face of some kids..so I think the reverse of that in the Tamron might be helpful to candid shots...if you look at my shots you wont find any with smiling faces and "cheeze" coming out of their lips.

..I know folks have had some problems with Broadway photo,, but I've made some purchases there without a hitch in the past and they have the new 24-70 ex macro version mfg#548101 for $339 w/4 year warrantee....anybody want to tell me a real horror story as to why I shouldn't buy from them???please do before its too late!...Now , If I was a really clever guy, I would send you , Condyke, my list of what I have and all my extra cash and you send me what you think I need as the need/money arrives...save me weeks of agonizing!! ;) Thanks for your help:D :D

So Costa Rica without Costa Wad

Save me a plot and maybe I'll join you guys. I could do with a sun tan and I know the wildlife is great ... and I don't mean Freddy's models

Do you think you'll use filters? I have a CP for my Tokina but that's it. Don't really use it much. You could get a good price for the 75-300 USM, unless you use the 300 end! That would release some cash. As I said somewhere ... get the Tamron if you want to get filters as it will save you some cash, otherwise I doubt the Sigma would scare small children. I don't think they really care do they? That's more a teen/adult thing.

There will be a spot for you anytime...and the wild life is great, all types! There is so much to photo in the people, ocean and and landscape,,,and the light is just terriffic! So there I do need a CP ..again, it (the filter)won't break the bank, especially if I can get the lens for the afore mentioned price..

PS..no selling my lenses...too many good shots with the 75-300....

Hey Peachman!
I was looking at your link above with the list of dealers selling the lens you are looking for. All I can say is "Run, Peachman-Run!" I would have to say that they are all of the "scamming" seedy type. You know, the kind of sales like:
"Sure, you can have the lens for that price, but the lens cap is an extra $45.00 and it only comes in a set. Shipping will be an extra 29.95. You should also buy the UV Filter for $50.00. What? You don't want the filter? I 'm sorry wer'e out of stock on this item!"
