I just bought a canon a40 (an upgrade from a the normal cameras to a digital one.... yehey!). But now I have some few questions:

I want to take shots and print out pictures of high quality, at about the sizes of any ordinairy 'photo print' done at the normal photo shops.

q1.) which resolution setting should I set it to?
- (L) 1600 x 1200 OR
- (M) 1024 x 768 OR
- (S) 640 x 480

(for compression I'm setting it as 'superfine')

q2.) Can you specify the sizes when the photo is actually printed onto paper (in inches) of each resolution.

Always shoot at the highest resolution that is available.
In your case (L) 1600 x 1200

then when you get your photo into an imaging program photoshop/Paint shop Pro etc, you will have the maximum amount of pixels for it to play with.

printing should be at 300dpi (again through the software)
