So after about a 10 day wait from B&H's website I finally got my 10D (now my coworkers are glad I'll finally shut up). Attached my 28-105 from my Elan 2E (sorry, Elan!) and headed out, utterly paranoid from all the stuff I read about front focus and unsharp pictures. It immediately started to rain, so I went back inside. Shot my dog (ouch!), shot my friend (murderer!). Are the eyes focused or is the nose? Hmm. Spent way too much time shooting barcodes on the box it came in, as well as my computer keyboard turned longways. Focused on the "A" at the far end, it came out clear on the "F" key. Not a scientific experiment, I know, but instantly distressing. It actually was fine without the flash, and front-focused with the built-in. Read lots of posts on this forum about AF tolerances, DOF allowances, 1D vs. 10D AF quality, etc. And THEN: tried to install PSElements and it won't because I don't have OSX! All in all not the fun weekend I was anticipating.

Gotta go to work now...I'll actually ask something tonight.

gkbs,

Almost all the pics I've taken since I got the 10D were in the rain,.. work schedule and the weatherman refuse to co-operate for me! :)

Stop shooting rulers and barcodes and get out there where there is some ambient light,. (even if it is grey) and enjoy the pictures. (do try and keep that baby dry though!!!!!! ) See if the you like the pics,. then .... then worry about the rulers!

P.S.
I too have been reading a lot about the focus,.
I have yet to shoot a ruler,. but I am loving the pictures!

I will eventually "shoot a ruler" but the bottom line is,. this is by far the best camera I have owned and well frankly as a newbie my skill level Vs. satisfaction are such that I'm not sure I would ever notice a problem,..

.....unless I "shoot that ruler" :D

Anyway,. the sun just came out and I have glass to fill! :D

GKBS- Try this for 10 minutes....forget everything you've read on this forum. Reset the camera software and go take some pictures of normal stuff in decent light. Come in and dump them...and take a look. You gonna love this camera. It's nearly perfect. Don't let a bunch of nit-pickers (myself included) ruin a perfectly good relationship. Liking your camera is a necessary thing.
I hated the D60, and I love the 10D. Also, remember that this camera is totally capable of taking some of the best pictures ever taken. Focus on you technique...general technique...because the 10D has more bells and whistles than you will ever use. Lastly, assign yourself some "Shoots". Go and shoot doorbells or household cleaning products....but SHOOT an bunch.

OK, I'l shut up now.

I agree with you Bob. Just taken my 10D on it's first outing to Kew Gardens in London, not the best of weather as it kept raining. Can't fault the 10D pics, ...other than my errors, even the pics of the aircraft coming in overhead on their approach to Heathrow were sharp. I get more impressed with this camera every time I use it.

"I hated the D60, and I love the 10D"

I agree totally, I loved my D30, fed up with underexposure probs on the D60...the 10D has finally gotten everything correct. And feels better in hand as well. You will love this camera.

Thanks, everyone, for cheering me up! I absolutely LOVE Canon, ever since my Elan IIe, which has such an amazing feel, such a wonderful "clack" of the mirror, great weight, and amazing intuitive controls. My 10D is just as wonderful, I know it. It has a few more buttons, a quieter mirror clack, but it also has that wonderful instant gratification that I know will help me learn SO MUCH! I feel like I'm betraying it, almost, putting it through tests I never even thought about with the Elan. For now I'm going to just shoot away and LEARN LEARN LEARN!

I love this forum - you guys and gals are a classy bunch!

LM@O!

He, he, he...

That's givin' it to ya straight!

I shot a ruler, and a page of regular text, and brickwork, and.... The worst results I got were from manual focus. Someone suggested I took off and got myself recalibrated (never heard it called that before)

Shoot! Shoot! Shoot!

I love my 10D

Hi GKBS,

I came to the 10D from a G2 - I loved the G2...

I bought a 10D last week... a week ago, in fact... read everything I could on the net about it... worried briefly about the front/rear focus issue, put the (gosh, not an 'L' lens - how will I live without F/2.8 glass?) 28-105 USM II on there and went out into the real world to try the camera...

Absolute heaven... fast focussing, brilliant pics... straight out of the camera even... I've had four POTD's on different sites in a week, and had people raving about the shots... one of the first 50 or so I took is a knockout shot of my youngest daughter... and it justified the cost of the camera in my wife's eyes...

Don't stress, go out and enjoy the new baby... if, after you get some time on the camera, you think there's a problem, by all means test... but enjoy it first... a lot of the focus 'issues' are a lack of experience with HOW the focus system works... shoot lots, you'll learn lots!!

I took well over 10,000 shots with the G2 to learn how it would work, predictably... that knowledge applies in a big part to the 10D too... but I think it'll take a lot less than a year to shoot 10,000 images with the 10D - it's a dream of a camera... ENJOY!!!

Cheers,
Stuart
