View Full Version : Err 81 becoming more frequent...

Since July I've experienced intermittently Err 81. I've always been able to clear it by removing the batteries and the CF card... wait about 20-30 seconds... reinstall and everything wil be fine.
This has been occuring on an increase lately and I'm wondering if turning off the auto-off function would stop the errors (it always happens while the camera is waking up from auto-off). How much does this deplete battery capacity?
Anyone else having this problem?

This sure seems like a case of "Doctor it hurts when I do this....So don't do that!".
If the autopower off is causing errors with your particular setup, I'd strongly recommend disabling it.
Battery life depends on LOTS of variables (flash, review time, CF card versus Microdrive, IS stabilization and type of AF on the lens, etc.), so its hard to quantify.
I'm very very pleased with my battery life - I get virtually a full day of shooting (400+ shots) on one battery. I tuck another one of those nice small batteries in my pocket, and I'm all set. I do not use an aggressive auto power off, but I do tend to turn off the camera if I'm not going to be taking pictures for the next 10-15 minutes or more.
Good luck!

I experienced the same problem and was able to clear the error by removing the microdrive and/or batteries. My D30 was sent to Canon in NJ for repair and returned in about a week and appears the problem has been fixed.
Best wishes,
Dennis
