if you do the maths its clear that the same camera like for eg. eos d10 is much more expensive in uk then usa if you do the currency conversion. i haerd a rumor that its becasue the camers sold in uk are made in europe while those sold in usa are make in asia. they are cheaper and of lower quality. is this true?

and are IS and L ( used in usa) features the same as USM ( used in uk) or are completely different things?

what is the name for the eos elan 7e in europe?

thnaks lot. hope yu can help. thanks again

Firstly, take care when doing currency conversions - US prices are invariably quoted before any due taxes, whereas UK prices are inclusive of all taxes. If you buy from a US dealer and have the goods shipped tothe UK you will be liable to pay import duties & VAT on both the goods and the shipping cost, as well as any shipper's handling charges. A reasonable allowance to make is to add 30-35% to the cost before doing the straight currency conversion.

As to the origin of the cameras, they probably come from whichever factory was making them irrespective of destination. My D30 was made in Japan but bought in the UK. The US models where the name is different "may" be made in a different plant, since the badging is specific to the US, then again it may just be another line in the same plant. I doubt that it makes much, if any, difference to the quality, though.

All three terms are used in both the US and the UK;
IS - Image Stabilisation
L - haven't heard a definitive answer to this, it could be Luxury, or maybe Low, for Low Dispersion glass.
USM - Ultrasonic Motor, fitted to the medium-high price range lenses

That's the EOS30.

I've been hearing that rumor for about 35 years now. It's pulled out any time you question why something is cheaper somewhere else. Interestingly, the same rumor is told to Americans when they ask about cheaper "gray market" cameras.

While I might worry about a Canon 10D made in some parts of Asia, my USA-bought 10D was made in Japan. I would instinctively trust a Japan-made Canon as much or more as one made anywhere else.
