bump
We have seen how well the A60/A70 is with macro shots and we all know how poor the A40 (without external lenses) is. One would think that since the A40 and A60/A70 have the same lense system (that is what I believe as I found it mentioned in a few reviews) that the A40 should be able to focus on objects just as close as the A70.
I recall the thread a while back where people mentioned that looking at the LCD while the A40 tried to focus on macros that were a bit close, that the image would appear properly focused for split second before turning blurry again. After seeing how well the A70 does with macros I have to believe that Canon has intentionally affected the A40's macro ability via internal software (fireware). Which means that if this is true, a fireware hack of somekind may be able to correct this.
Anyone have any ideas on this theory?
