the rock is a hill with a ruined castle from which a beautiful view can be seen

this church rests at the bottom of ... 'the rock'

(the place is not too far from home)

I love the architecture. Do you know when it was built?

It looks as if the Rock has cleft and hidden this little chapel in the vale. :)

Marie; I just love the last one you posted, I think the way you framed it is wonderful. What beautiful country you have.

That is an amazingly beautiful shot. My first impression when I saw it was that it was a minature setup. So crisp and clear.

Very nice, Marie. I'm really hoping to make the (short) hop across from Wales to Ireland at some point soon, and your pics make me even more eager to go. :)

My only criticism of these particular shots is that the sky is that the sky in both is completely blown out. You should consider using an ND grad or (the way I prefer in the digital world) blending multiple exposures in Photoshop, to restore detail to the sky.

I love that first image, Marie.
It has a beautiful diffuse glow to it that works really well.

I would normally agree with SBradley's point about blown out skies but in this case it adds to the dreaminess of the image.

To be honest, I'd consider cropping the (first) image so that the church is roughly central, vertically. I just tried it, and I think it looks better. (It removes the (for me) distracting sky and slightly washed out "upper" part of the hill.)

If, however, the fact that the church is at the base of this hill is important, then that might take away some of the point of the shot for you. :)

I took a shot of it through a 'window' of the castle also
(it was wide open...
I mean the 'window' was )

thanks SBradley

no worries, it's ok
the nd filter was on on the camera
although the sky was washed out , the more washed out look was intentional with diffused filter being used
looks slightly foggy , or frosty (or dewy grass) to me
which I like,
wanted to put more emphasis on the church in that shot , and the grass around it

I took a few shots of the church from a few different angles,

the building looks too 'stilted' when sharpened so I didn't bother with that this time

by the way , welcome to the forum

it's just below the ruins of Dunamase Castle
which is on the Rock of Dunamase in Co Laois

it's a turn off ( ) before you get to Portlaoise
(about three/four mile outside the town)

Very NICE shot, Marie! I'd crop just the sky out of the 1st one to remove the sky & make the hill look higher.

I had thought of that but I think the picture needs to show the tiny space above the hill like it (whether it be white or blue skies)
otherwise (I think) the scene looks as though it got a bad haircut

here it is cropped (ever so slightly)
see what you think

for anyone who likes to have a look

this is the lane leading right into the space where the church stands below the castle ruins
(at the lower end of the lane , at the bottom of this picture
the church stands just around there)

see what you think I LIKE that crop, Marie! I might darken the top 10% a bit just to focus the interest down to the church. ;)
