I just bought a g1. read the manual. How important is taking out the battery whenever the camera is not in use?
Anything that can be done to prolong the life of battery?
Also, is there any performance loss with a 256 mb flash card?

Performance of compact flash cards varies a little from one size to another, and from one manufacturer to another. See this Rob Galbraith page (http://www.robgalbraith.com/reports/storage_media.html) for examples of variations. However, my opinion is that unless you're either armed with a stopwatch or a professional so busy that every wasted second is a wasted dollar, you won't notice any real difference.
I've never taken the battery out of my G1. If you are going to avoid using it for a month or two you might want to take it out, otherwise leave it in, keep it charged, and takes masses of photos.
Congratulations on having read the manual! Play with the camera for a month, then read the whole thing again. I did, and was amazed at how much I had either forgotten or not understood the first time.

I only take the battery pack out to alternate it with my backup. I would agree with Shaunyc, the only reason to take it out is if the camera will sit for a couple of months.
The battery life (at least mine) is just remarkable. I rarely wait until the battery pack is at 0% to recharge.
I just plug in the DC adapter and charge. I can't remember ever running out while shooting. :)
As for reading the manual, I would suggest going to www.dpreview.com and checking out their documentation. I found it to be much more helpful and detailed than the manual that came with the G1.
