Hi,
I usually don't post full size photos, but maybe some of you need to see how an in-specs 10D performs with a good lens.
Here are some real life test shots (snapshots, not art!) I did during first hour I got my second 10D. I deliberately used shallow DoF (large apertures) to see focus point, and fast shutter speeds eliminated any possible camera shake. To read the sharpness of these images you naturally need to understand how DoF works and that DoF describes "acceptable level of unsharpness" - there is only one _totally_ sharp spot in each DoF, exactly in the focused point!
They are converted from RAW with tools available in Capture One DSLR Lite RC2 and only PS editing done is conversion to 8 bit sRGB and saving as full quality JPEG in Photoshop 6.

PS. I have not "chart-tested" this new 10D yet, but with all my Canon lenses it performs as above. With Sigma 20 it is very good, too, but Sigma 14 fails to get good focus with AF but manual focus gives expected results. So I'd suggest that you make conclusions about AF and sharpness only with Canon lenses. All others are reverse-engineered and so they may be buggy with new Canon bodies.

Wow,...
well I'm glad to see you are back on track with the new body! The proof is in the Pic.
The Gentleman with the Ice cream cone,. one need only look at the railing he is sitting on to see the focus point looks to be spot on!
Impressive shot of the cyclists!

Well its been 40 years since I shot slide film and in those days you looked for sharpness in large projection screen sizes. So to today, I have produced G2 image slide shows for PC projectors at 4 ft by 6 ft screen size with mixed results. Some sharp. Some not so sharp at say a 13 ft viewing distance.
These 10D shots are indeed the sharpest that I have ever seen. For example, the reflections around the transmission (?) of the motorcycle are as clear as a bell, and this is not even the main subject.
Quite remarkable.

very interesting pekka...
guess it's time to dump that first run 10 d :)
i've had all assortment of focus problems...nothing TRULY severe but i have been deliberately ignoring them (i just don't want to join the chorus of voices whining about it) but after using my 10 d with a brand new 24-70 2.8 L it's OBVIOUS there's a problem...40 shots and hardly a one perfectly in focus...even my 28-70 L doesn't have that big of a problem)
i'm still grappling with dumping this one on ebay and getting a second one (honestly for the price of that 24-70 i could probably have purchased a second one and compared) either way...i promise that when i purchase the 2nd 10D, if i find anything peculiar i'll post the results...

Awesome! I look at shots like these, ones that others have produced and my own and then ask the question: Is film dead?
A picture says a thousand words. And answers that question quite nicely, IMO.

Soft sharpening, amount between 200 and 300 (to taste). Treshold at 0 (if noise is no problem). Also, noise reduction was at lowest setting.

These shots are a great advert for the 10D. Colour, detail, exposure, focus.... The skin tones on the bloke with the ice cream - wow!
Thanks Pekka - Go Canon!

They were saved to JPEG in Photoshop 6 which does not save EXIF. I have also PS 7 but for some reason C1 opened TIFF's into PS6.

· Great shots Pekka , can I ask did you remove the uv filter from the Canon 70-200 2.8L , I have read in one other forum where canon advised a owner of a 10d to do so as it could affect focus ,something to do with it fooling the camera as there is a coating on this lens , please excuse my lack of technical information on this , as I’m new to photography, I have recently acquired the Canon 10d and 70-200/2.8L witch I intend to use for portraiture ,

Hi Pekka,
Your examples are always excellent. Much appreciated you sharing your thoughts.
However, have you noticed that in areas with fine details such as hair, the 10D tends to bloch those areas together where it is not in focus, small DOF. I'm not sure if I'm clear in my description so I hope you understand what I mean.
I'm not talking about a focus issue, but more of a rendering issue.
May be it's just me, but I didn't notice it that much on the D30.

I have shot last 6 months without any filters but I doubt they would affect focusing if they are of good quality and clean.
I'd like to give warning though: if you scratch an L lens it may be really expensive to repair. So when I don't use protective filters I always keep the hoods on and take care that there is nothing in the bag to damage them (e.g. place one lens on top/inside other).

Must be noise reduction effect (it can not be turned completely off). I'm not bothered by it, if we talk about same thing.
Michael Tapes said that the C1 noise reduction is not in final stage and it will be finetuned.
