OK...share a picture, share a thought, share your new gear or even your classics...seek advice or feel free to offer some...not a competition...not a test...you don't need an L....but don't be a pest....check your attitude and ego at the door!:p If your here for fun...come on in....if you're here to stir up trouble, go darken another door. Can't get much simpler than that.;)

Sat. Morning's activities completed. Went to a local Dog Show to lend a hand to a friend. She shoots the shows on spec and has had inconsistent results with her 1D3. So I took my 1D3 and my 1D4 for her to try. She shot the 1D4 with both mime and her 100-400, while I shot with my 1D3 and her 100-400 and her 1D3 and 100-400. Between all that messy combo we should begin to get a feel for where any problem might be.
Came home and sanded the front door and gave it another coat of varnish. Still more coats needed, darn Northern Sun. Not the best time of day or even day to do this. Sitting on 88F, bit warm for a Spring day.
So now it's relax with the Rugby time. Argentina vs Romania.

My long-lost Santa Barbara, California homestead.
My parents had this house built in '61-'62 and we lived there until around '66-'67.
http://crosswindimages.com/img/v28/p789299285.jpg
Probably built for at or below $50,000 and, according to the last contact my late parents had with friends in the area (probably 2000 or so) had recently sold for north of $1 Million.
Leaving SoCal was the one and only regret my Dad ever said out loud...

I have some fleeting impressions from this house and can vaguely picture where the windows were in relation to my crib / bed.
I know it had a cool foyer area that was mostly glass but I don't remember it having a garage. I guess it must have had one back then because I remember my folks talking about an abundance of Black Widow spiders out there as well as an encounter with a King Snake one time. I'll have to hit the slide boxes I inherited and see if there are any shots from "back in the day."
I can't recall much about our first house out in the suburbs when we came back to Michigan ('66-'67) but I can see every detail from our Detroit house ('67-'83) but of course, we were in it for much longer and I was much older.

I'm like this also. I can walk into any building come out and draw you a floor plan months later. I make use of this at work a bit to visualise a substation I haven't been into for a few years -helps that our subs use simple floor plans.

No kidding, I've hit 45 before, and it really freaked me out. Even just hitting a small pebble is really scary.
Having a blowout would be really really scary, quite frankly at the minimum you'd be spending a few days in the hospital. And that folks, is why you wear a helmet. :)

It took me all of about 2 seconds to rethink that maneuver. I kept the remaining downhills to right around 30.....and even that could lead to some serious road rash if there were to be a problem. The worst part is the road grit that sand blasts your face. I wear glasses and wish I had a closer fitting pair for riding.

But I wear contacts so once I started going on longer rides, and at higher speeds I really needed something to cover my eyes so my contacts don't dry out. So I went out and got a pair of Oakley Radar Paths.
That and I had too many close encounters with bugs running into my face at 30mph... All it takes is one in the eye to really mess up your day..

So I discovered something weird on this SoCal trip...
At one point during our day at Sea World, my MkIV ripped off like five or six shots in rapid succession more or less on its own (I was in Low Speed Burst and not in Auto Bracket) and, it also changed itself from Servo to One Shot. The latter went un-noticed until it bit me in the arse at the Dolphin Show.
I guess it was just one of those electromechanical weirdies that happen when the brain is a computer.

My tripod was spread so I was shooting from about waist high. At normal height, you couldn't see the far end at all.
Amazing to realize that the great an powerful Titanic was only about half as long as the Queen Mary and that the Queen Mary II is nearly twice as long as the original Queen.

Over 900' of continuous hallway!

I'm told that significant "heave" will tend to straighten the curve somewhat.
The carpet is not original but it bears motifs that mirror some of the significant carvings seen in various places on the ship.
They used 27 different kinds of wood throughout the interior of the Queen Mary. Five of them are now extinct and the rest would, by and large, be cost prohibitive to try and use today.

Better get in before Harm does and rubs it in. The Aussies lost to Ireland last night in the rugby. Makes our trip through the finals a lot harder now. In better news my league team (Brisbane Broncos) have booked a semi final place with field goal in extra time in last nights game.
That was a bit of a shock result. I must say though, so many people are missing penalties in this WC! At least England won, hopefully they can continue :D

Obviously, people live in "pods" where anything beyond your commute is probably an unusually long drive. We do that to some extent here in Phoenix. There are parts of the valley I've probably never seen and we have been here 14 years now.
Granted, we were traveling 100 miles on a couple of days (San Diego to the south and Santa Barbara to the north) and we were in a very south-central location in Long Beach but if we do it again, it will be linear in nature with a couple days at one end then migrate one way or the other instead of out and back.
Cruising through Malibu was pretty sweet though. There are some mind-blowing "beach shacks" along that stretch of the PCH.

Hi guys :)
Rumour has it that the ball is very different and that the Kiwi's did things this way to favor running Rugby rather than a game that is decided by penalties or field goals. Looks at Jonnie's 2 from 7 conversion rate in the first game. Big shock for England if he can't overcome this.

Yeah, I was wondering if there was something about the ball....
But give it a few days, people will have a handle on it. Just like in football. If the Kiwis lose with that new ball :D:D:D chokers ;)

When the P-51 crashed in Reno a couple days back, I heard on the news that it was in an area of VIP box seats. It is common for the larger casinos there to 'buy' these boxes and give the tickets to VIP guests, so I started worrying about a friend of ours who is the Director of Casino Marketing at one of the larger casinos in Reno where we are usually treated quite generously. This is the sort of thing he does, and it would not be unusual for a number of his high-rollers to be at the races. I left him messages for a couple days, and he finally called back. Indeed, they had purchased a box of 10 tickets, and he had given them to a group of favored guests.
By some miracle, every one of those guests had gone to a hospitality tent somewhere behind the bleachers, and were having snacks and drinks of some sort. They didn't even see the accident.
A lot of our friends know we used to go to Reno quite often, and we've received 3 calls so far from people who were afraid we might have been at the races. We are always invited to those events, and we just don't accept that often. It's too far to drive for a quick visit, and we opted not to go this time. I'm pretty happy about that.

The style of driving had as much to do with my frustration as anything else in LA...
Rather than whoa up a bit and leave room for traffic to flow, they all run up on the ass of the person in front and do the old accordion thing. The other thing I found truly odd: rather than pass a slower vehicle, most in LA seem content to just drive 10+ mph under the speed limit and let the line of cars just pile up behind the slower vehicle.
My Theory: Folks in that part of the world are so used to driving well below posted freeway speed limits that they don't know how to look more than one car ahead of themselves. If you could institutionally train the greater LA area to look 1/4 to 1/2 mile farther up the road and learn to anticipate traffic flow better, the entire metroplex would move more smoothly.

That is so completely opposite my experience from driving in Southern California for 30+ years. People here take all kinds of crazy risks to swerve around slower vehicles. It gets really bad on the two-lane desert highways. Attorneys and funeral homes love those roads...
