View Full Version : Preserving EXIF data in Photoshop

If I use BreezeBrowser and Paint Shop Pro at work to edit photos for uploading to EE it seems to preserve the EXIF data so that EE can read those settings for the gallery

I've recently bought PS CS2 for home use and I'm still getting to grips with it but I find that I have to manually enter the all of the various settings info into EE as it doesn't seem to included with the image so that EE can use it.

Any ideas or suggestions as to a workflow with CS2 that would sort this problem would be welcomed

if you do "save as" it preserve all EXIF, it you save for web - EXIF is distroyed.

I've been sending it to ImageReady to sort the compression out and then doing a "save optimised", is that what's destroying the EXIF data?

Yes.. it is the exact same thing as "save for web" in photoshop

Just do a file > save as

Odd, just tried saving one straight out of Photoshop and jpg doesn't seem to be a file format option

Ah, if I open a jpg I can then save it as a jpg but if I open a RAW file, e.g. a Canon CR2 file then save as doesn't list jpg as a file save option.

Any ideas why?

I've bought a couple of big Photoshop books to go along with my purchase of PS but I'm still working my way through them

Got it, I was working with a 16 bit image. When I reduced it to 8 bit I was able to save as jpg and preserve the EXIF data

Thanks for the quick help guys!

hi :)

i'm not sure it's true
what about makernotes ? mine (from 350d) are lost :(
it depends if we can say that makernotes are real exif data or not...

if you know how to keep the makernotes saving a file with photoshop, please share

best wishes

I use a program called Exifer (http://www.exifer.friedemann.info/) to backup the EXIF and IPTC data before messing around in photoshop. I also find it to be one of the most simple programs I've seen to add/edit IPTC data.

Usually what I do is something like this:

1. Work on copies of the originals
2. Backup EXIF data using Exifer
3. Edit as needed in photoshop
4. Restore EXIF data using Exifer
5. Add IPTC data using exifer

Even when using save-as in photoshop, it seems to alter some of the EXIF data. Hence I use exifer to backup EXIF prior to any photoshop work.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

thanks alphabono, i was aware of that solution but i must admit that it's not very easy and could easily lead to errors :(
how do you guys do to keep these makernotes intact, i'd like to keep them available for exhibit engine. irfanview seems to keep what i want but the script mode of photoshop was a great for me since i have to create thumbs and microthumbs "by hand"

take care

bump
i've tried many programs to create three photos from the original one, let's say 800*600,80*60 and 160*120, in ONE step
as i said, the script mode in photoshop would be perfect IF the makernotes were kept

thanks a lot for any advice
