Did you use a flash and longer exposure handheld?
The flash got the sign and the long exposure handheld got the blurred traffic.
That would be my guess.
and I do like it, very nice job :)

its actually a very creative way of achieving a motion effect. You simply spin your lens focal length as you shoot using a long exposure. I've done many on www.sandierox.com > "photography" with the same effect. As well as a flash shot at the beginning and the end of the exposure.

Sandie, I love this and I haven't tried it yet. My flash isn't quite up to snuff - still using my old Speedlite, but I am going to try this. If they turn out half as good yours, well, I will be one happy old lady!

Nice pictures.. I see your technique but wonder why the sign is still in focus and not panning with the rest of the picture.

This is because the flash shot off captures the sign but is not strong enough to capture the background. Neat eh?

She technically used the 20D stock flash for this shot :) . No speedlite was attached!

damn, you bet me to the explanation haha
my brother always used to take shots like this to get some weird effects, wish i had some of his work to show you.
a decent 3 second shutter with a flash will do to get some cool shots, i might give it another try (done a few crappy ones before) just after sunset outside and see how i go
top job sandie

Very nice effect and good skills with this technique.........I've used slow shutter with a flash at the end of exposure to capture the ghost effect, but not a flash at the beginning also, I'll have to give it a shot.

Having a very nice time with the 20D. Question for everyone--what exactly is the difference between the 550 and 580 flash besides speed and weight? I see that Sandie used the 550 with the 20D and pretty successfully. I can buy a 550 now for about half the price of the 580. What say all of you-- oh yeah, and I tried some of those moving shots at night. Not nearly as good as Sandie's but coming along- and if you saw my pet Santa pictures-- well, I know, not very sophisticated but a really good day's work....funny as all.

Actually, these shots were all done using the stock 20D flash if i can remember correctly. I didn't own my 420EX yet. Keep trying, it can be a fun way of painting with night light!
