ok I am looking into getting the: Manfrotto MH054M0-Q2 054 Magnesium Ball Head with Q2 Quick Release

or :Gitzo GH2780 QR Series 2 Ball Head with Quick Release, Supports 30 lbs, Black
is this overkill for A Canon 5D2 with grip 70-200mkII , 580exII
what ball head would you recommend or have used on your setup?

What legs are you putting this head on? And how much are you willing to spend?

And no, that is far from overkill for that combo.

For what it's worth, I have a Manfrotto head now & will be upgrading to a Gitzo whenever I get around to upgrading my legs. More support is better than less for both the tripod legs & ballhead.

probably the Manfrotto legs pro3 carbon fiber ..
can you put the gitzo on the Manfrotto legs?

I would say manfrotto 055xprob and 498rc2 combo.
