this is my attempt at macro. it's a water drop in my kitchen sink. nothing sophisticated. just a digital rebel 300, a crappy sigma 70-300mm, a tripod, and one of those big ol industrial halogen work lights you get as a useless five dollar big lots christmas gift and think "i don't work on cars, i don't even have a garage, when am i ever gonna use that?" pointed right at my sink so i could get the shutter speed where i needed it. i was happy with the outcome. i'm really impressed by all the amazing stuff in this forum. really makes me crave those extension tubes everybody seems to have! comments are welcome!

very effective - couldn't you have used flash instead to freeze the moment?

yeah, it would definitely have been easier to use a flash, but at the time, all i had was my on camera flash with max sync of 200. it just wasn't doing it. since then i've gotten a 420ex and some alienbees, but at the time it was a make due with what you've got kind of situation. thanks for all the kind comments!

Excellent picture.
I like the sharpness and limited DOF.
This reminds me something I have found recently that amazes me.
Here it is :

jose, i went to that link and only found one page. i'm very interested in the high speed technique, but i couldn't find anywhere to navigate once on that page. if i'm missing something let me know. i'd like to check it out. it was talking about getting shots because of skill, not luck...right now i'm all luck on the high speed stuff - that page sounds like what i need! let me know what i'm doing wrong.
as far as settings, i was at 300mm f5.6 shutter speed 1/800sec. i used a tripod and continuous burst. took several shots before i got the splash i was looking for.

Don't think you are doing anything wrong. Most peeps I've heard talking about this admit it is very hit or miss, but work out some sort of timing based on when the drip leaves the source (eg they talk about firing the shutter just as the drip leaves the tap or whatever) and with the reaction speed the drip is hitting the water surface when the shutter actually goes.

One very interesting is Water Figures workflow
You'll be amazed.
If what happen to you is that the links dont work when clicking on them, I really dont know what to say.
