Canon 70-200 f4
Optics Best in its class
Aperture f4
Built Like a tank
Tripod collar Not supplied (more than $100 value)
Resale value Excellent
Snob Value Excellent
Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Optics Excellent but not best
Aperture 1 stop faster than Canon 70-200f4
Built good
Tripod collar Supplied
Resale value Good
Snob Value ok
:D
Actually, if I want to make a decision for me, I would go for Canon without thinking twice

Snob value - I like that parameter.
I'm thinking about making the 135mm/f2.0 my first L lens. I recon that apart from being praised as one of the most sharp lenses around it will also have a high Snob value.

I have owned a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 and now have a Canon 70-200 f4. I would not wish to go back to the f2.8 for my purposes (unless I was a pro photojournalist). It is too large and heavy, though it produces beautiful images, even at f2.8. The f4 is a dream to use, sharp, light and fairly fast. I shoot with a 10D at 400 ISO which works great.
Hope that helps.

I have not used the Canon lens,. :(
But I love the Sigma f/2.8 on my 10D. It is my best lens for sure. Crystal clear and fast. I just took a bunch of pics today in cloudy overcast of a soccer match. The lens stopped the action perfectly. (I have never photographed sports before,. I like wildlife,. the game happened to be right next to where i look for seabirds!)
It is also very light in weight and yet very solid.
Yes it comes with a cllor/tripod mount. A lens hood. It is internal focus and zoom. The HSM motor is darn near silent. And it can be had for less than $600.00

The EF 70-200/4L...
why?
I switched from Sigma EX 70-200/2.8 to EF 70-200/4L and the 4L is sharper @ f4 than the sigma is..
Sigma has its sweet-spot @ f8, but the sweet.spot on the Canon is already @ f5.6 IMHO...
Also.. its nearly ½ the weight.

I was going thought the same debate about a month ago.
I had the Sigma for about 2 hrs. on my 10D! I took about 100 pictures at a local park after leaving the local dealer. I was quite happy with the lens and the 2.8. My only concern was the size.
I was having great fun with it until it made a grinding sound, then an then Error 99. It never worked after that. On any camera.
When I took the lens back the next day, they didn't have a replacement in stock. So, I went for the Canon 70-200 f4, although I miss the 2.8, I have found that the Canon is the right size, very comfortable, fast AF, and fits most of my shooting situations.
In hindsight, I'm happier with the "size" of the Canon compared to the Sigma, as it relates to my shooting. I won't get into the AF speed, build quality, and final output.....
