"web size" image or ?

we are doing a promo shoot for an upcoming mini session, and as thanks to the "little model's" parent(s) we are giving them an 8x10 and a digital image of the same image as the 8x10. Honestly, I don't want to give them the full size image ;) but, not sure if I should give a "web size" / good for online sharing size image, or whatever the next size is that you really can't do much with (would that be ? 600x400 ?

While I have you all here....What is a good "web only" size....

There was a post about McDonald's and copyright violation where poster sized prints were made from 100 KB website files. If they'll already have an 8x10 print, why worry about them being able to "do much" with a digital file?

If they have a home computer, they might like to have the image as desktop wallpaper, and 400x600 would be small on most computer screens or would probably look bad if enlarged to fill the screen.

thing is, if you give them any files at all, they'll print them. May as well give them reasonable image to start with if you're going down that road.

If your intention is to prevent them from printing your files you might as well just not provide them with files. People will print them, then show their family and friends and tell them you were the photographer. If those images don't hold up... probably not getting referrals from those clients. in the long run I do not think you are doing yourself or your business any favors.

I either sell high res images or nothing. If they order high res I will also provide them with web friendly shots too at 800x600.

Yes. You can't practically control what they do with the images by restricting the file size. Control their usage--as best you can--by written agreement as a license. Some people will honor it once it's been shown to them, others won't.

Ok, got it :) good advice, much appreciated. They can just have the image :) thats fine. Its only one image. Our hope is they'll want more than just the one :)

Any "free" or complimentary "web sized" images that I send out fit within 1024*1024 and have my watermark - thats big enough for desktops / social network use - but watermarked against printing. They can crop the WM off if they like, but thats normally more work than someone is going to go to for printing reasons

(would that be ? 600x400 ? Find out what site they're using & try to give them the right size for it that avoids the site processing it, because it's your image & if it doesn't look good...
