Hey really need to know why everyone shows the 17-40L while shooting outside hows the lens inside a club or at a bar have the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and love it. Just as sharp as a Canon 24-70mm L at 1/3 the price. Shooting outside almost all lenses will do well. i'm a rookie trying to justify the money for the L. And the Tamron 17-35mm is f/2.8-4 whats that mean.

The Tamron is one stop brighter on the wide angle end @ 17mm. I debated for weeks between the two but spent the extra and went with the Canon. I truly believe inside depending on the lighting one can up the ISO and still get quality results out of the Canon. Both are fine lens but once you attach the Canon and touch the shutter button ... well I'll stop right there.

canon focus is faster but in terms of image quality i could not be happier with my tamron. the focus speed really doesn't bother me too much either. wide angle lenses seem to focus quickly anyway. its a huge upgrade from the 18-55 kit lens

My brother and I did a side-by-side comparison two weeks ago and the Canon produced slightly better images. I deleted all of the images, so I don't have any to share. sorry.

I too am looking to upgrade from the kit lens. What is the difference in price from the Tamron and the Canon.
I used Tamron for year on my OM-4 and thought it was great.
What about Sigma wide zoom. I have a Sigma 70-300 and like it. But must admit only used is slightly so far.

Finally is there any market out there for the kit lens

The Canon 17-40 will run about $175 more that the Tamron. You might sell the Kit lens here or @ FM for around $50 I'd think.
