For ages I’ve wanted two nice gadgets for my camera - a nice wideangle lens and a beltpack. Skip gave me some good advice on which beltpack to buy and so I went into a camera shop to purchase one today. While I was there, I asked them about wideangle lenses. Not intending to buy you understand, just getting a feel for the market.

Now it turns out that they just had a delivery of the Tokina 12-14mm f4, which they were selling for a bargain price. Interesting I thought, so I put it on my camera and took a few pictures. Not intending to buy you understand, just seeing how much difference it made.

Needless to say I now own a brand new lens. Still not quite sure how it happened but anyway. Here we come to the nub of the problem… having spent months telling Helen how little money I have, how on earth do I tell her that I just bought a new lens?!

The way i put my old dear at ease Sam, is by going through what i had to go through last night. 90 minutes of her trying on clothes in ted baker, watching what could have been a crumpler brians hot-tub back pack (which i really want), turn in to a pair of £160 boots. I further £200 on a pair of jeans and two Tshirts, and that's just the start of her "Birthday build up"

Remember that line from the untouchables, that Sean Connery gave?

"If they send one of our guys to the hospital, we send one of theirs to the morgue"

That's pretty much how Diane, sees shopping:)

But she did buy me a 35 1.4 for my Birthday in sep

All's fair in love and shopping;)

Hey Congrats Sam!!

Let us know how you like the lens after trying it.

As for your strategy, how about something as cheesy as "I bought it to take better pictures of you". She's probably smarter than to fall for that though :D

Say, You found it on the floor or it was only 10 pounds but if she looks at your credit card bills just say i needed it to take my photography to the next level :D

ROFL! Way to go! She's a keeper, no doubt!

My 4.5-year-old PC has been giving me problems lately, and I mentioned that I needed to buy a new computer. My wife said "That sucks." But she didn't say "No." :-)

Ohhhhhh, you lucked out Sam. She sounds like a honey.

I am hankering after that 35mm/1.4 lens that everyone is showing off lately but I don't dare say anything to Skip. He's likely to buy it for me and I am trying to save money for our European trip next spring. :):)

12-14? You mean 12-24? I have that one, it's a great lens :)

Yup - I meant the 12-24. Damn typos ;)

Glad you like the lens. I'm just going through the fireworks pics from last night. First impressions very good :)

Hey, that's what salesmen live for. :) Congrats on the lens, I've seen lots of recommendations here for exactly that lens, so I'm sure it's worthwhile. The only thing you can do now is grovel. :) and take some great pics to show her.

Well another day out shoping for me yesterday, no complaints standing around outside changing rooms, being asked to go and get a differnt size skirt ect. "don't complain Sean" i told myself.

I was a good lad, and good lads get crumpler back packs;)
