I would like to add this sort of effect to some of my photos :

I know I could simply burn each corner (using the dodge/burn tools) but I would like to have a layer (and blending mode) to simply overlay on my image and get a similar effect. I really like the way it adds to some photos.
Any assistence is greatfully received!

There are several ways to do this. Here's one:
1. Using a elliptical selection tool, place the cursor on one corner of the image and drag down to the opposite non-adjacent corner of the image.
2. Feather the selection (25 to 75 or more, depending on the size of the image). Play with this until you get the right amount of feathering.
3. Invert the selection. Selection > Inverse.
4. Create a curves adj. layer. Layers > Adjustment layers... > Curves.
5. Drag the point on the upper right hand corner of the graph halfway down the right side so that the graph line is going from the lower left-hand corner to the middle of the right side of the graph. You can vary the slope of the line to get the amount of "vignetting" you want on the corners. (I tend to make it darker than necessary and then adjust with opacity.)
6. Adjust the opacity of the layer as required.

Or shoot in raw and play with Lens > Vignetting. You can create a similar (if not the same) effect very easily.
Try it.

Great advice, works perfectly - thankyou.
