I am NOT a wildlife shooter but I rented this EF 70-200 F2.8 IS for a shoot this evening and I have it for the weekend.... I thought it would satisfy my desire for fast glass and it will until it has to go back Monday.
I put some dried corn on the deck and waited. This guy showed up and while nervous he did allow a few shots. It is dark and gloomy today so the image is a bit soft but I like it. The lens is amazing!
Comments/suggestions welcome, edit OK.

Interesting idea - renting a lens, never thought of that. What did they charge for the weekend?

The outfit in Portland charges $25 a day for this lens. But they are closed Saturday and Sunday so they give it to you for the weekend for the one day rate. If you just stop in after 3:00 on Friday rentals on what's left are half price for the weekend. We are picking up a 200mm F1.8 for $20 for the weekend this afternoon.

Thanks CDS, they are all over our deck out here but I don't usually have the glass to get them. There are two of them out there now fighting with a squirrel over the corn.

Very nice shot. You'll have to consider a new lens and branching out. I like the Steller's Jay a lot, and find they will overcome almost all their fear for food. For example, I've had them on my picnic table too close to focus.

I think it's a great shot and don't find it soft at all. That is such a beautiful bird, I wish we had those around here.

Thanks for the kind comments. They are beautiful critters for sure. They do get noisy when annoyed but their antics are worth it. I am going to try to get some more shots this weekend as I have also now added the EF 200mm f1.8 to the collection too. Rented of course.
