I'm wondering that myself! What's the nylon band near the front element for?

Canon's famous weather resistant gasket for L lenses.
A spare one ($38 wholesale).

The rubber band is attached to the lens cap. So I do not lose it while being in a hurry. Its quite nifty!!

Count me amongst those who have seen the light where this lens is concerned. I got mine about three weeks ago, and I continued to be impressed by the results I'm getting, even when paired with a Tamron 1.4X.
Before I bought it, I was also considering getting the 20D. In the end, I decided that the lens "takes" the picture, and the camera stores it. I went with the lens, and I couldn't be happier. The 20D will come in time...

Congrats Gienek on your purchase. I have yet to try my lense because it had to go to Canon for repairs. The truck showed up today but I was gone so I will be picking it up in the morning. This was a horrible experience for me because I sold the 70-200f/4 that I loved to get this lense and when I tried it, it sucked! I really hope Canon did a good job. The whole focusing system whas replaced as well as the mount at a cost of $300 Can. I am lucky that the person that I baught the lense from is going to cover the cost of repairs.
