I love the 10D but sometimes I get these Error 99s and I can't take a pic.. I reset the battery.. change the settings etc. But, it won't work.

Then all of a sudden it work. I am thinking it may be my flash card.. not sure. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have not had the error, but I have seen others post stories in relation to a lens that seems to have compatibility problems.

What lens are you using?

Sigma,. for instance has a line of EX lenses that seem to work well with the 10D but some of the "non-EX" lenses or older lenses in general have compatibility issues. It turns out that in most cases the "chip" on the lens can be upgraded for free by Sigma which will get the lens to work with the 10D. Please note that in this case the lenses were on the market before the camera,. so Sigma could not prepare for the compatibility issue with the 10D ahead of time.

I'm sure that other lenses may have the same type of problems.

If it IS a Sigma lens,. look here for details;

Canon very unhelpfully lists error 99 as any error not listed. It happened with me with an old Sigma lens. I put my Canon lens back on and it worked. It is conceivable that your error 99 is something else but I agree, try a different lens first.

Good luck

I found an old Sigma lens caused the error 99, but only intermittantly. Eventually I figured out that it only happened when the camera was telling the lens to stop down. So an interim workaround (until you either get the lens fixed by Sigma or get some nice new lens) is to use aperature priority. No more error 99s.

thanks for the Info... I thought maybe it was the Compact flash card.

But. I am using a Sigma lens. I bought it for my EOS 5 in 2000. It is intermittent... but seems to crop up when I really want to take a picture LOL

Anyway.. I will check out the Sigma website for info and thanks for the advice. I hope I can upgrade the lens.. I really like it.

Hi guys,

I just got my 10D and have found huge problems with my Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Zoom Macro Super. First thought it was my Kingston 512 memcard, but since the nice guy at the shop checked what "err 99" produced from google it was all clear.

(Note to fellow Finnish readers here: IQs in Kallio, Helsinki is selling 512mb Kingston at only 102,4 euros!!!)

I really like the lens since it has a variety of zoom (gets little soft at ~300mm though) and a 1:2 macro in it. Anyways, I can shoot with the thing ONLY when using biggest aperture available, in other cases I get a n "err 99". Any more tips to avoid the "err 99"? Also appreciate tips how to get a Sigma lens fixed from here Finland (havent yet investigated that thing). I really like my lens too and am keen to upgrade it! :)

Oacheson's tip,.. set the camera to Aperture priority (AV on the dial )and select an aperture manually,.. if it works for all the Sigma lenses,. is a god send.

Thankyou oacheson!

Good luck Daniel. I think Sigma will take care of your lens. In the meantime try oacheson's tip...

.... AND COME BACK and let us know if it works!!!!!

Thats what I've been using, the AV-mode. I'm gonna do some heavy testing near future if I could find some more tricks.. :)

An update to the matter.

I got the following information:

It is possible me to send my lens to my local import dealer and they will fix the lens free of charge. Sigma takes care of the costs. Nice.

Here is an list of all the Sigma lenses that may have problems with the Canon EOS 7 / ELAN 7 / EOS 30 / 10D camera body

http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/support/eos7.html

Hope this way everyone gets their Sigmas to work properly. :)

Thanks for that Link Daniel.

It is interesting to note that not all examples of the lenses on that list have this problem with new Canon bodies. For Instance I have used both a 28-200mm and currently a 28-300mm on my 10D with no problems. So newr manufactures of these lenses should work correctly.

Err99 is a typical 10D error and many 10D's are
sended back to Canon because if this. This
seems to be a larger problem the the front or
backfocus. Many dealers do an initial check
on the bodies before selling them to check if
this error occurs .... So send it back to Canon,
and be patient, very patient ....

Err99 DESCRIPTION: This error occurs if there is an internal malfunction detected during the camera's self-checking procedure that's executed before every attempted exposure. This is somewhat similar to the flashing 'BC' warning that occasionally appears on EOS-1 series 35mm SLRs.

REMEDIAL MEASURE: Try releasing the error by turning the main power switch OFF and then back ON. If this does not solve the problem, have the EOS D60 examined by a qualified service technician. Please be careful to note the conditions under which the error message occurred. This error is similar to Error 09 or Error 10 on the D30.

Well after less than 300 pics, I just got the dreaded Error 99 and I'm using a new EOS 28-135 IS lens. I went to take some pics after a couple of days of not shooting and didn't appear to boot up. Then I got an error 99 flashing on the screen. I charged my batteries and still the same. I formatted my CF card and then switched the card just to be sure. Not much help at the Canon USA site. I guess I'll end up sending it in

So now we have at least two causes for the "error99"

Lens incompatibility,.. and at least some cameras with problems of there own giving the same error. :(

Followup: I just called Canon...summary, "sounds like something wrong with the camera". He doesn't think it is the lens. He told me to try my other lens (sigma) and see if it works with that but most likely it's the camera. Percentage wise, he said they haven't had that many problems with the camera considering how many they are selling every week. I said if there is a bad one, I'll find it.

I'm slighly embarrassed. I fixed my error 99 when I got home. I took off / then re-attached the lens and voila it works again. I don't why I didn't try it before but the lens has been on for weeks and no problem so I didn't put 2 + 2 together. Embarrassed but happy.

You know,. I got an Error 99 for about 2 seconds the first time I tried a 2X teleconverter,... the camera just seemd to say "What the H@ll??" ......

so I took it off and put it back on,.. never had a problem since :)

Sounds a little familiar?

I'm glad your camera is working again!

ALL MY Error 99's have been related to poor contacts between lens and camera. When using 2X plus a long heavy lens, the total weight is a bit too much for the all the contact points. I always craddle these monstrosities when off the mount ring.

Also, occasionally gently clean the camera and lens contacts per manual.

Had numerous 99 errors with a EOS 300 f/4 L on a recent Florida trip. Cleaned the contacts on the lens and the problem went away. Cameras was D60 and 1D.

I had my first err99 the other day on my 10D. Took out the IBM microdrive and re-inserted it and all was fine.
