I'm having trouble with this lens on my 20D. The only lens in my collection (and still under warranty) which causes (75% of time) the camera to lock up and err 99 to flash. Tried cleaning the lens contacts - no change.

A quick survey on whether others have had this problem with this lens...

Posted this in the lighting and flash forum but no idea how to move it so here it is again!

I never had that problem with that lens, or any other. I only had ERR-99 once, that was when I was using my Tamron 28-75 to take photos of a huge fire. Can you try another lens to see if it does the same thing? I can't suggest anything else really, sorry.

I'll move your thread from lighting to EF-S, you'll get more replies there.

I had a 99 err on my camera and it was my Sigma lens. I sent the lense back to Sigma and they fixed the problem and now my 99 err code is gone. I don't know what the did but it worked.
Good Luck!!

The few Err 99 lockups I've had were always the first shot after switching to or from the 50/1.8. I don't really use that lens much anymore, and I can't remember the last time I had an Err 99, so I think there is definitely some correlation.

Thanks Tim. No problem with any other lens. Only this one, so it's off to Canon this week.

Keep me posted if you have further lock-ups with this lens.

Will do, I really need to send this lens off. I've had focus issues with it many times where when focussing it just locks itself up. This time it lock my camera up.

I had the same error for the first time this past weekend (I've been using the camera for just under 1 year). I was doing a food shoot with my 20d and the 100mm f2.8 macro set to manual focus and the camera set to 10 second delay (to reduce camera shake). I have used this set up for hundreds of exposures with no problems, but this time the camera counted down the 10 seconds then instead of making the exposure it started flashing the Err 99 code on the screen. I simply turned the camera off and on again and everything was fine. I was concerned that it might have corruped the data on the CF card but after D/L to the computer I found that all of images were OK. Maybe it was just a freak occurence or maybe it's time to have the camera in for servicing as the shot counter has just passed the 10,000 exposures mark. By the way, does anyone know how many exposures the shutter on the 20D is rated for?

Thanks

Well, same thing is happening to my nifty fifty.......Error 99.....I thought it was my 300D at first, so Im somewhat relieved (thank goodness for this forum....I was ready to send the camera in to Canon). All my other lenses work fine. What to do know.....any suggestions? Send it in to Canon or what.

Thanks

I've had this happened to me too, using slow shutter speed. I don't remember if there was an ERR 99 message though.

It felt as if the blades being stuck open.

Turning the camera OFF brought back things to normal.

If it keeps happening, I'll return it to be checked.

I just had my first Err99 yesterday, and I've only had the 20D and the lenses for a couple days. Yesterday was cold, so I was just fooling around shooting at various things outside the house through the window with the 70-200 on. At one point, because of the window glass, the focusing became wild and confused. That's when I got the Err99 message. Turning the power off and turning back on didn't do the trick. When I took the battery out and back in, all went back to normal.

I had the same problem, with the same lens last week. Turning the 20D off and back on cleared the error, but it just reoccured the next shot. Turned off the camera and took the lens off and reconnected it. Was fine after that. Not going to lose any sleep over it :)

Well, apparently the err99 is directly related to the damn nifty fifty......having the same problem on my 20D (problems started with the 300D and the 50). Ive tried everything to clear it.......cleaning the sensor, remove battery, off/on.....blah blah blah.....

What is the procedure for having the lens' repaired? Never (knock on wood) have had to send anything out for repairs yet. And at the moment I cant find my damn receipt, and dont remember if I paid with cash or credit  . Very aggravating, as I bought it in 01/2005, and took maybe 200 pics with it.

My 50 1.8 came back from Canon. The iris had been the problem. I had the technician check the focus calibration while it was in. All in order now.
