This looks interesting :D

An ultra-telephoto zoom lens, which overcomes image blur caused by camera shake.

Sigma APO 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX OS is one of several new products introduced at Photokina 2002 by Sigma Corporation of Japan (2-3-15, Iwado-Minami, Komae-shi, Tokyo, Japan).

Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilizer) system detects camera shake by utilizing two sensors, and then by the movement of an optical stabilizing lens group. It is equipped with two optical stabilizer modes to compensate for image blurring.
Mode 1, determines the camera shake in vertical and horizontal panning and compensates blurring, this mode is effective when shooting static subjects.
Mode 2, detects the vertical camera shake, and overcomes blurring. It is especially effective with moving subjects such as motor sports etc.

Doesn't do us any good, though, if it's not in production and, as of this moment, it doesn't seem to be.

Accually.. for that price (1600€), i find a used EF 100-400/4.5-5.6 IS USM a much better choise..

Since this is Sigmas first IS/OS there might be some issues.. But on the other hand, the EX-serie is pretty nice in quality..

But.. I would easy go with a used EF 100-400 IS USM..

I hadn't seen prices?

I assumed it would be a bit less. But it is still good that there is another manufacturer looking to develop this type of lens.

Absolutely! The Canon 100-400 IS zoom is a fine lens but a bit soft at the long end. This is very apparent when comparing it with Canon's non-image-stabilised low priced 400mm F5.6 prime. I know that primes generally have better optical performance than zooms, but you wouldn't expect to see it at f11.

Bump, SIGMA's first OS lens.. 2003

No HSM at the time on this lens, which was a significant drawback for the sales on this option.

Funny we were just discussing that!

And the 100-400 will get updated when the 80-400 finally does
