So late next week im off to New York, Philly and Washington. Im taking my 7D, 10-22 and 70-200 f4 IS, while im there Im picking up a 17-55 IS :). Since i had to put a value to all of my camera stuff when i got my travel insurance i can bring either my 50 f1.4 (Canon) or a my 430 EX (and still have it all insured).

Since im picking up my 17-55 while there, i dont really know what the difference in IQ is between them and how the extra light v IS on the prime compares.

So in my position, would you bring the 50 f/1.4 or the 430 EX to supplement my gear?

430EX, for fill flash more than anything. I use flash more on vacation than almost any other time. On vacation I often have little control over time of day and lighting, and the 430EX is the tool I need to deal with harsh midday sun.

On a 7D, the on board flash works admirably as a fill flash. When I travel, I always take a midrange zoom and a fast prime with me at least. 24-105 and 35 1.4 or 50-1.4 on 5d2. I think you will find it more useful than flash, esp b/c of on board flash.
