A70 a dream, but now paperweight. New noises on powerup, screen lights with no picture, small message "E18" bottom left, powers itself off. Tried fresh sets NiMH batteries, different CF cards, thith and without files, all no change. Error code not mentioned in manual. Help!

Hi,
Try to turn ON your camera in SHOT mode (not in PREVIEW!). Turn the camera, so that the LCD will be pointed down and lens up. Try to turn ON your camera in different positions...
Report about results!

Thanks for the suggestion. No go; at least it does the same thing each time, whether in shooting mode or review, and in all positions. It has been in this condition for over 20 hours (always a hope it'll go away by itself!)
I forgot to mention that the camera never did properly shut down in that the lens is still extended. When I put my ear to the camera after turning it on the buzzing is a little like a slow busy phone signal, with the short spaces in between not completely quiet, but with a thinned out buzz.
Anyone know a phone no. for a Canon tech? Thanks.

If you go to Canon's website they have a VERY extensive self-help and FAQ section that desribes the exact E18 error that you are describing. It is a common issue.

Could someone please post a URL to the section dealing on the E18 error?
I get the message occasionally (well I only bought the camera two days ago.....) but I can't seem to find the info on the vast Canon website (guess the search is not indexed that good)
