Howdy again guys and gals. This year, under mounting pressure i have decided to make a calender for 2006, with 12 of my pictures. I nearly have them all (one more of the Forth Bridge to go) but am having a dispute over the following two. These were taken yesterday evening and are of Glasgow Tower and the Imax theatre. The question im asking is which should i use? I myself prefer the framed one as i think, though darker it has more atmosphere, and my girlfriend thinks the opposite. Ive come to really respect the opinions and talents of people on this site so if you take a moment to cast a quick vote/opinion i would be gratful.

Cheers,
Adrian

I prefer the second one.

I like the midnight sepia treatment of the first one, but the problem is that it is being seen more and more. It is threatening to become cliché, so I would more likely go with the second shot.

The two things that I would change, compositionally, would be to straighten out the tower (unless it leans like this in real life and everyone knows it), and to crop about 1/2 to 2/3 of the water. Once we see the reflection, the additional water is just redundant.

As far as color goes, it looks like you have two different palates going on in the shot. You have the gold of the “giant beer keg” and the cyan of the rest. I would shift all of the blue just a tiny nudge to the yellow, but leave the keg the way it is.

Like the second one, love the colours!

I like the picture on the left. Its darker, but the highlights are really dynamic and moody.

The only things I personally would change though is I would straighten out the tower, its leaning to the right a little bit. I would also clone out the single light in the water reflection, its a little distracting to me.

Great photo though!

These are very effective. I like the first one and also the border which mirrors the materials used in the structures.
I like the light on the Imax in the second one best and if this tone could be applied to the Imax in the first one then I think No 1 should go into your calender. would look even better.

Interesting advice from all. You've certainly made my girlfriend very happy. As for the tower not being straight, i actually thought it was, but didnt check it too thoroughly. Ill have another check and see what i can do.

Anyone gonna side with me???

I like the cleanliness of #1. I can't quite put my finger on why but #2 seems that much busier. Of course they are different sizes and one has a frame, so it may be that much more difficult to pick out the differences between them

I agree Big B, didnt have time to put the frame on both and think it makes it hard(er) to compare the two. I couldnt agree more about the busyness of number two. I think the simple colours make number one. Less is more in this case i think. But it appears my young lady is still winning hands down. But theres still time yet:)

I'm definitely going for #1 but any photo that makes Glasgey look good deserves to be printed! ;)

#1 for me! #2 sacrifices atmosphere for meaningless detail.

^ well said. #1 Gives you a feeling that something is being said by the piece. #2 is a nice picture of a tower and a theatre.

I love #1, #2 is nice as a photo, but lacks the soul of #1 as a piece of art

I can see that Glasgow has changed a bit since I was there as a Midshipman on the USS John W. Weeks, DD-701 in July of 1952. I was lucky enough to be able to see the famous Lena Horne playing at the Empire Theater. The people of Glasgow are the friendliest and proudest people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

I found it difficult to choose, but will plump for No1 on the basis that it's 'more different' from reality, and think that may suit a calendar of local sites where the audience see them often and you give them something a bit different.

I'd be great to see a scanned page or two from the end result calendar to see how they look.

Good luck with it.

Wow, i thought this thread had died. Glad to get some more opinions though, and there going my way so im doubly pleased. It seems im still losing the overall vote but i think no 1 may pinch it in the end. Ill let you know what happens and try to post the end product.

To me, if the lake from #2 were in #1 it would be perfect. Particularly because I like the sky in #1. This is really a great shot.

You'd have to put the same frame round the second one too for me to be sure which I preferred

I vote for #1. It looks like it's the set of some gloomy science-fiction movie.
