Still waiting for snow here....soon

I love when it has just fallen and sticks on the sides of things like your picture

Me too! Also when there's frost on everything.

Weird, that concrete shed photo has had almost 3000 views in less than a day. I don't understand it.

Not nearly on par with the rest of you, but just got my 35L yesterday! Right out of the box I was happy to see I got a UZ08! Pretty fresh glass! A few shots with my "models" and I'm quite happy. I was shooting at 1.4 mostly to make sure I felt good about the focusing. Looks pretty close to me. And the sharpness looks great. Less CA than any other prime I've ever used wide open! I can see why L Primes get addictive!!

This is SOOC. Just adjusted white balance. No sharpness aside from what LR3 does on export. ISO1600 on a 5D2.

Wouldn't normally shoot this at 1.4, but very happy with the sharpness of the hair above his eyes, where I was trying to focus.

Sorry you're having trouble with yours. As was said in your thread, if you have no confidence in it, best to exchange it. I started getting worried after my first few shots. Then I set the camera on the counter and pointed it at a nice high contrast box with some other items behind it and tried this at several different distances to make myself comfortable that it was focusing right. It's definitely close enough that if I do later find that it's off a tad, it's within MFA range, and both my bodies have MFA. I've also seen more than adequate sharpness from these 1.4 shots to believe it's sharp. I will try it tonight more at f/2.0 where I will likely use it more and see how it goes.

This is exactly what I did. 24-70 was my walk around lens till I got the 35... once I got it, the 24-70 never saw much action so I sold it. I do miss the 24mm, but hoping to fill that void with at 14mm in the near future :).

I barely ever shoot at 24 unless I'm shooting a landscape otherwise I stay up from 50-70. She is a great lens but I'm back on my prime binge again. lol So why not get something faster?

If you are getting paid it seems to always have a use even if it is just as a good back up. I think about letting mine go all the time due to not using it much and am just recently starting to think the money could be spent on something I will use or just pay towards camera debt. When the 24-70II comes out I will just pick it up again.

How do you like the ABR800? I'm thinking of getting one (or the AB800). I'd be doing mostly portraits and although I love the effect it produces on the eyes, I don't know if it is worth it to just get that.

Nice one Dankata. What kind of lighting did you use?

I used 430 EX II above the camera and 580 EX II camera left in front of the model, both shot through white umbrella, triggered by Yongnuo ST-E2

Superb work with the 35L Dankata! Love the recent red on red shots!

Thanks :)

Setup, in case you're interested: I used two 580EXII flashguns to light the picture. The main light was off-camera on a cord shooting through a white brolley above camera and to the left. A second gun was fired at the ceiling to give an even light across the background.

Thanks for the kind words! Throughout the session I did use OCF regularly with my assistant holding a diffusion panel to tame the bright sun, but this shot was taken later in the session, and a huge rock provided some nice open shade for a few minutes, so this was shot with only natural light and no reflector/diffuser. For most of my sessions, I'll have my OCF, a reflector, and a diffusion panel ready, and then I'll determine what will provide the best light for that particular shot and time. I was thrilled when we captured this shot!

For those that use it on ff camera, do you guys find it a tad too wide?

I mostly take portrait shots and to me you have to get pretty close to fill half the frame without cropping. I mean if one has to get so close, why not just use a 50mm?

50mm does give you a slight narrower view, but bokeh will be better and just as sharp, also less intrusive. What do you guys think?

The 35L based on photos on here, is used more for loosely framed environmental portraits than, say, headshots.

I am not too sure about 50mm has better bokeh nor the sharpness. I do see you have wonder ful sigma 50 that has sharpness and good bokeh but I think 35L is in its own league.

Though I have to admit, I kind the felt same when I used 35L for the first time. Since I too came from 50mm length prior to 35L. - I did not find it wide but did not see how to fill the frame.

But as I get use to compose the photo with 35L, I realize 50mm cannot do same for 35mm.
Nor, I will use 35mm for same shot for 50mm legth. Although they are very close to do what you have said, I find (YMMV) that they are distictive from each other.

Remember, most people's eyes are use to seeing 50mm, thus many will find more comfort zone with 50mm forcal length (IMHO).

I think its matter of personal taste. For the same reason,I bought 24L and 35L together to see what I like better. i asked many folks in here to see their opinions. Both are great lens but eventually I picked 35L.

As a result, 35L is stock to my 5dmkii for 90% of the time, unless I need to shoot with strobe.

Come to think about it, I have to admit, I cant take a good photo with 35L + strobe.... I dont know why.

Do any of you guys find this?

But here is my 35L picture with out any crop done.
I dont think you can get same perspective with 50mm forcal legnth (You could get somehting similar but not same).

(sorry about old photos)

Nice pics. The last picture is perfect with the 35L, thou the first 2 would probably be better with longer lenses such as 85mm or longer imho, and that's exactly what I am trying to say. 35L is quite intrusive with tight shots, also bokeh won't be as good compared to a longer lens due to short camera to subject distance.

I guess right lens for the right shots...there's really no shortcut unfortunately :(

Thank u.
Of course, I see your point. When it's compare to longer length lens bokeh is going to be less admiring. But I was comparing to 50mm.

Either way, 35L is my most used lens of all.
Hope u cN enjoys it as well!!

Great job, can you share your camera settings for this shot as well? Thanks, Adam

Thanks, Exif says ISO 1250, f/1.4, 1/80. I used 430 EX II above the camera and 580 EX II camera left, in front of the model. Both fired through white umbrella and triggered by Yongnuo ST-E2

Love it !!

Thanks!

Was this taken with 5D2 or T1i? Looks like you used the 430 or 580 flash bounced?
How do you like the 35L on the T1i? I chase my 2 year old all over with this setup, and strive for shots like the one above :)
Also is there a way to trigger the 430 ex flash off camera remotely? I'm on a budget and want to trigger it with a umbrella indoors and outdoors.
thanks I admire your work
