Told my daughter I'd get a few shots of her marching band's final performance of the season tonight. Any suggestions on how to shoot them, outdoors, from the stands, at night? Equipment available is in my sig.

TIA

Get at least three automobiles lined up along the parade route so that they are parked off the path but their headlights are aimed into the on-coming band at an angle from the side. Preferably, the autos are parked on the same side as the photographer. As soon as the band passes a certain marker, the autos are to turn on their headlights for 2 minutes, while you shoot like hell and the band goes blind. Ought to make a helluva shot!

Manual settings at ISO 800-1600...say f/1.8 and 1/60 shutter. It really depends on the setting.

need to shoot a marching band at night? Pick a good spot, I'd say either a grassy knoll or A high window, something like the ones that can be found in say, a Book Depository Building. Then get out your old trusty Italian Army rifle and aim really good.....
lol
just kidding.
Good Luck!

It was very cold and windy, especially standing at the top of the concrete bleachers, and there wasn't even much to shoot (my daughter plays the marimba in the marching band; they don't actually march). Anyway, I ended up having to park a long way from the stadium, so I just took the 5D with the 70-200 f2.8 Sigma, Could have used a lot more focal length; should have taken the 20D and the 300 f/4. Anyway here's a sample image of the color guard; ISO 1600 f2.8 @ 1/200
