I've been liking shooting RAW more and more since i purchased my XT, however my main issue with shooting raw right now is that i am forced to shoow RAW+JPG so i can quickly view the thumbnail or picture on my laptop without opening photoshop.
Is there a program that reads raw files and can open them up quickly? (i convert to DNG because CS cannot read xt RAW files) sometimes i am just looking for a certain picture, but i have to open each file one by one in photoshop just to see which picture i selected.
I guess i'm looking for a program that treats RAW files like windows treats jpg files. it can show a thumbnail or a preview of the picture so i know which picture i am opening. This helps especially when i'm shooting people and they want to see the picture right away after i load them into the laptop.

Nothing with reading RAW is "quick". Irfanview has a Canon RAW plugin that will allow you to open a RAW file and it will process "as-shot" settings. The opened image will be full size - not smaller like its embedded jpg.

the main reason i think there ought to be a quick view program out there is that the camera itself can preview raw very quick. i dont really care if its in camera settings or if its a 100x100 picture. i would just like to see which picture i am opening before i take the time to open it.
as more of a want than a need... i would like to have a quick browser of DNG or RAW so i can just show my subjects the pictures i just took w/o having to process each photo. right now i have to shoot RAW+JPG (killing an extra 3MB per picture) just so i have a file to show immediately. then i can process the RAW after the shoot.

yup, if you are running windows xp, go to the windows site, and look for the power toys, they have a raw viewer you can download. but you have to be running service pack 2. this will also make them show up as thumbnails in windows just like the jpg's

Check for updated Camera Raw Plug-In on the Adobe site. I believe the XT writes CR2 files, the same as 20D. Had to update my Raw plug-in to version 2.4 to handle the CR2 files.
cheers,

The software that came with your camera is pretty good. I shoot 95% RAW and use ZoomBrowserEX which loads automatically after downloading the images into the computer.

I use breezebrowser to for quick viewing of my CR2 files. They have a very good renaming tool in there as well.
I had the Microsoft viewer installed for awhile but had nothing but trouble with it. Whatever image I happened to look at was locked until I rebooted. I eventually uninstalled this.

Rawshooter essentials (RSE) is tough to beat for the price--free. But don't let the fact that it's free mislead you. It's very powerful and high image quality.

That's wise, you won't feel much like study if you do it beforehand.

I could be wrong, but I think XT RAW files, while CR2, need ACR plug-in 3.0 or higher and cannot be read by CS, only CS2 or PSE3 or higher.

Looks like RSE isn't compatible with DNG files from the XT. they're working on a fix for it still. CR2 works fine, but i have a ton of DNG files i converted back when i dint have a program to open CR2 from XT.

Is that right? I thought the whole point behind DNG was that it was a standard file format - a DNG from a 20D should be the same as a DNG from an XT so RSE should not have to make any changes to support a new camera.

Surprisingly enough there is a very basic freeware program called Picasa for editing photos. They have just upgraded to include RAW formats. It's nice because the library will show the RAW and the Jpeg side by side... Man! What a much better image in RAW... Anyway, you might enjoy the ease of use in this program. www.picasa.com

apparently there is some information that's different that causes this problem. various people with XT's have had this problem, and RSE is aware of the problem. it should be addressed in their next release.
what's really odd though is that when i first load the picture into RSE it shows up fine, then 2 seconds later it will turn magenta cast. i think RSE is reading the RAW correctly, however it gets some piece of information from the file that changes its color cast. no amount of post processing can fix this. =T

I believe that the DNG layout allows areas for manufacturers to add camera specific data. Perhaps the issue falls within this area.....

this looks like the company who developed the shell extention for Power Tools for XP. The Plus version adds some nice features. not a bad program for 10 bucks.
