I shot a feature on a truck for the cover of a truck magazine. The owner is wanting a cd with several of the pictures. Ive never sold a CD of pictures before so i have no idea what to charge him. Ive sold printed pictures but never a cd of digital images.

I wouldn't think the CD enters into the equation. You should be selling limited rights to the images. Write up your contract for whatever those rights are worth, and "oh by the way" the images will be made available on a CD.

The issue is that you are selling multiple high resolution images that the buyer can reproduce as often as they like. You are losing 'artistic control' of your product. If that isn't an issue price the shoot and the image. I would think that for portrait work and certainly wedding work the photographer makes a fair amount of their profit on the prints. You lose that as soon as the client has a printable digital image.

Thats ok. The truck owner decided he didnt want them now. He found out that i wasnt going to "GIVE" him the CD. Since the magazine payed me to use the pictures for his feature. He feels that he dont need to buy the pictures now. Like i owe him for him, as he put it, "letting me shoot his truck". Shouldnt it be the other way around. He should thank me for getting his truck on the cover? LOL

I agree. OTOH, when someone buys a shot of their Classic car, I include a CD with printable 4X6 (proofs) & the 12X18" single file In different folders along with the web sized images in a separate folder. They sign a property release & the invoice tells them what they can use the images for, which is nothing commercial. I also note on the invoice that they have my permission to make prints for their own use since some vendors will not print without a release from the photographer.
I also note the © info on the label of the CD.
I'm happy (got paid), they're happy, & they tell all their friends.

Can you email me a copy of the release form you use? That would be GREAT!
And on the buying a print and giving him the CD. He never bought ANYTHING from me, he just wanted it all for free! LOL

It's an Excel file, Brandon. Here's an image.
Re, your "Turkey", I got that. So I said, OTOH, when someone buys a shot... ;)
