I took these pictures w/ my point and shoot A510 while on an archaeological dig up in Wales, Alaska. The lakes up there make for awesome birding since many birds migrate north to breed. I can't wait to go back there and take some better pics now that I have my new camera. The first photo shows the village of Wales (Pop. 152). If you look closely on the second photo you can see the Diomede Islands and Siberia in the background.

Great shots. We spent 2 months in Alaska in 2004, but I've never heard of Wales. I can tell it is very remote. Must be an interesting place to visit, especially being paid to do so.

Who are you trying to fool here? where is the snow? I thought it was always frozen up there.

Jopfin, we are excavating a mound/village that is located directly behind the modern day village. This past summer we excavated a house that was 700-1000 years old. The great part about archaeology in Alaska is that with the freezing and permafrost you get great preservation of artifacts, especially the organic ones, such as the ivory harpoon heads, wooden dolls, masks, baleen buckets etc.
Sparker, it is remote. In fact it is the westernmost tip of North America. It is pretty amazing to look over and see Russia on a clear day.
Falkon, you need to come up to Alaska and see just how beautiful Alaska really is during the summer. The snow does last a little longer up at Wales than down here in Southcentral, AK. There were still patches of snow when we landed on June 23rd. By July all the snow is pretty much gone, the wildlife and birds are everywhere and the sun is up for about 20-22 hours a day. Hey, I even went swimming (for about 1 min. :)) in the Bering Strait just to say that I did it. Heres some more pics of the village and the old mound site. It is the large green mound that pops up out of nowhere.

I love the first picture. I like the way the shore line curves around with the surf highlighting it.
