View Full Version : \"Generic\" NiMh... will they work?

I'm about to get a PowerShot a40 in a few days, and I've already purchased a battery charger along with batteries that come with it. They are 1800mAh AA batteries. I've read the manual for the a40 online and it recommends using the Canon rechargeables (of course.) Does anyone think my camera will have a problem?

I was also concerned about the quality of generic batteries.
I have now trialled 3 different "brands" (4 of each) and have had no problems at all.
This has been over a 12 month period.
Happy snapping.

They'll be fine. Don't worry about it at all. Even the tech support guys at Canon recommend them (min 1600mAh).

You can't even buy the Canon rechargables all over the world, but don't worry about the "other" brands. As long as you buy a respectable brand and good capacities they'll work fine.

The main issue with "replacement" batteries is their staying power.
Be careful.
The battery for my Canon S230 is a NB-1LH and puts out 850 mAh. I purchased 2 "no-name" batteries and they are 740 mAh. they work fine, only not as long as the original Canon.

Except that the subject is about the "Generic" NiMh (penlight) batteries which are available up to 2100 mAh output, and not the Li-ion's.

I have the A40, it's a very good camera and works with anything I put in it, even the original high performance alkaline AA's were ok until I switched to NiMH. However, if I were buying a camera today, I would take a serious look at the A70. I like the size and feel of the A40, but the A70 has added features and higher resolutioin and doesn't appear to cost very much more.

I buy what I call greens because they are green I guess. But really, I buy them 50 at a time because I abuse them to the max with my mission trips.
I buy them on Ebay and at times have gotten them for .75 US Cents each.
I buy 1800's and have one set that has over 300 recharges(I condition them every ten charges with my Maha 204 charger) with no sign of lossing any thing.
The company I do business with is called Amondotech and their shipping and handling is a lot less than others.
But what really extends the battery's life is the charger.
