I have a couple of camera bags already that I use for walk-about with my 20D and Sigma 18-200 lens attached. But I recently added a 580EX flash, and I would like to find a bag that holds all of this along with some incidentals. The problem is the length of the 580EX flash, which is a good eight inches long.
I would like to avoid a backpack, but am having difficulty in finding a bag either long or wide enough to also accommodate the flash. Many bags have the length to accommodate the camera and attached lens, but do not also have additional free space of enough length or depth for the flash. Does anyone have any suggestions? I could go for a shoulder bag, belt bag, convertible or top loaded. Thanks for all help.

I have the Tamrac System 6 ($59). It is an over-the-shoulder bag. In the main compartment I carry an XT, with a 17-85 attached, carried lengthwise on the top in a built in cradle. Beneath the XT, in a padded compartment I have the Sigma 18-200. You can easily exchange the 20D for the XT as it is not much longer, if at all. Exchange the Sigma as it is smaller than the 17-85. I also carry the following, in the main compartment. A 580 EX - vertically, a 420 EX - vertically, a folded Stroboframe Flip bracket, a small portable mini tripod, and the off-shoe camera cord. There is way more than enough room in the various zippers and compartments for my lens caps and hoods, filters, batteries, CF cards, etc.

I was looking at the Tamrac bags and actually found one that seems to be right on point: The Pro 5, model 5605. It is a top loader designed to hold a large DSLR with up to a 200 mm lens attached, along with some additional lenses, and exactly what I needed, a large flash. It seems to typically sell for $ 58-65 USD. I am off to do a little measuring, and if I think everything will fit, will likely buy this.

MillCreek, take a look at Lowepro Toploader 70AW. I just got myself 75AW to fit 70-200 IS, but for 200mm 70AW should be just fine.
Good luck.

Just to update this thread, I did go with the Tamrac Pro 5. A pretty nice bag, in my view. It holds my 20D with Sigma 18-200 attached with the back of the body at the top of the bag and the lens barrel down in the body of the bag, the 580ex goes in one side compartment, and the Sigma 28-75, 70-300 and rocket blower go in the other side compartment. The filter wallet and storm jacket go in the front pocket and I still have some compartment and pocket space left. I particularly like the top-loader layout so I can grab my camera out of the bag and have it ready to go quickly.

Here's what I'm using: Nova 4 AW
I just purchased this bag. My use of it will be to store my batteries, flashes, and as well an asundry of cables. I just purchased a Tamarac case for my 580 in the event I start using it on hikes.
