"These can be recharged hundreds of times and hold an excellent charge, but will lose their power in as little as a month of disuse. "
from amazon.com review
I don't understand... Does this mean the NiMh batteries are useless if not in use???

All batteries "drain" over a period of time. NIMH just do it a little faster.
It means that when you recharge the battery,. the charge you give it will "drain off" in a matter of a month or so. They do not hold that charge like an Alkyline will for a matter of years,. (decades even)
But no worry,. the battery is not any less functional,. it just means that if they have been in a drawer for a few weeks, you need to top them off again in the charger before using.
