Does the Canon 17-40mm F4L lens eclipse the flash when shooting with the on-camera flash of the 10D? I would expect it at close distances, but wonder if it is a problem at normal distances. Thanks.

The built in flash does get partially blocked when using the canon 17-40 l mm lens with the lens hood. When an external flash is used on the camera, like the 420 EX...or if you put the flash on a flash bracket ( which I do) there is no problem with the flash being blocked by the lens and lens hood.

And without the hood? I do have a 550EX, but don't always carry it with me. Thanks.

When takin shots with the lens hood removed from the 17-40 L mm lens and using the built in flash, there will still be a shadow from the lens blocking the built in flash up until around the 28 mm range on the lens( from the 17 mm -28 mm range there will be a shadow)...above 28 mm there is no shadow.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated!
P.S. - Are you satisfied with the image quality of this lens?

I have only done a few shoots with the lens, and so far I am very pleased...I will be shooting several events and some models in the next week or 2...so by then I should have a better opinion...But so far...I am very pleased...and I think its a very good lens for the price...and a perfect match with the 10D
