Please. Help me start

This is my first post. I really need help to decide from where to start. I tried to look if they have section for newbie in this forums but I couldnt find any.
I dont have a camea yet, I do have an old (4 years) camera kodak DX4900, but I dont what to buy. Im willing to spend $1000 US for the camera. But Im sure for this pice I wont be able to know the features that camera will have so I need basic tips. You got it made. Just get a new Reble xt, or even the old Rebel 300D and a kit lens, start shooting and asking questions here.
